Honeymoon over for President and GLBT community

Image...
The honeymoon is over for President Barack Obama and the GLBT community. The passionate support the President once enjoyed from the GLBT community is slowly turning sour, curdling in the President's inaction. As a conciliatory gesture President Barack Obama signaled to gay rights activists that he's listening to their priorities by extending some benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. Yet he failed to deliver what justice demands, allowing a growing anger against the President to simmer.

"We all have to acknowledge this is only one step," President Obama said in the Oval Office. There he signed a memorandum that made incremental changes to benefits offered to the same-sex partners of gay federal employees.

But the President's critics saw the gesture as a meager move to expand gay rights; little more than pandering, the primary aim more about cutting short a possible fundraising boycott, rather than meaningful or dramatic change.

I am not satisfied. If instead the President introduced legislation to repeal DOMA I would be happy.

Until further notice my money is no longer going to Democratic candidates. I will no longer support a party who does not support me.

Hopefully, during his time as president, he'll be able to present bills that allow people within the LGBT community to have the same amount of basic rights as non-LGBT community members.

He still has several years left to do this.

No I don't think Obama is doing enough. I'm not sure if there is just too much ridiculous feigned anger from the 'leaders' on the right about every single thing he does for him to address all the issues in ways that make sense. Maybe he thinks that if he pisses off the religious right too much, those idiots will reach a boiling point and we'll get more violent acts from the right -- or if his campaign promises were lies. I dunno but attacks from the right saying he is too liberal are ridiculous. Based on his actions, he is closer to the center.

I'm finding that the people most disappointed in Obama so far are those who didn't care to read the fine print.
He did say he was against gay marriage, so expecting a deluge of GLBT policies pronounces an indelible level of self delusion if not naivety.

From the article "Indeed, President Obama has failed to make any effort towards repealing DADT (Don't ask; Don't tell), a policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The President has failed to block the dismissal of gays and lesbians who face courts martial for disclosing their sexual orientation."

I know he said he wasn't going to do anything about trials already in progress but I don't remember him saying that he won't do anything at all.

Also from the article "On the campaign trail the President opposed same-sex marriage, but also opposes a constitutional ban on same sex marriage. This ambivalence is troubling."

President Obama says he supports civil unions which, if made into a uniformed list of benefits across the country would be the same marriage, just not called the same. I don't care what it is called as long as I get the same rights as everyone else I'm fine.

I am quite annoyed with Obama regarding LGBT rights (and regarding other issues, for that matter).

But then, I did support Hillary and donated to her campaign, after all... I always saw Obama as some well marketed sellout, and so far he's proving to be just that.

So I'm not too surprised. -_-

Seriously this priority should be a low priority as of right now. I'm neither saying that it's not important at all or that I do or don't support it BUT we have way more important things to be worrying about PLUS Obama shouldn't be focusing on such a small minority when a whole nation is on the edge [Tangent - I think we're good enough now and won't become the next Roman Empire].
We saw Clinton waste his time on it when it came to the military and I think Obama learned from Clinton's experience.

Well according to the White House website President Obama still wants to repeal DOMA. I understand the anger at the way the D.O.J.'s appeal was filed/written, that's justified. However it is the D.O.J.'s job to defend any law that is in place, regardless of the current administration's feeling on that law. It's a fact, just like it's a fact that he legally couldn't extend all benefits to same-sex federal employees partners.

Furthermore, I whole heartedly agree that same-sex marriage should be allowed and that homosexuals deserve the same rights. But I'm going to be blatantly honest and say something very unpopular. Right now the Pres. Is strugglingto get a health care bill passed, fighting for a government optioned program, fighting for a cap and trade system, introducing the largest regulatory reforms since the 1930s and planing on an infrastructure bill all while making sure he deals with Iran and N. Korea correctly.

    What do we call that?

Prioritizing. He has a precious amount of political capital and clout and to introduce a DOMA bill in Congress right now would most assuredly damage his climate change plans, health care plans and so on. Of course this debate could easily go into morality, pragmatism, consequentalism and the whole greater good concept.

Either way, I'll write a letter to my state reps and ask them to support a bill repealing DOMA ASAP.

Hussin is a muslim - why would you think he would fight for your gay rights? You're either naive or ignorant - or both. Your messiah is starting to show his true colors. Let the gays down. Let the Armenians down. Let the Jews down. Let America down. Hmmm - the cool-aid must be wearing off... Hahaha

Eh, there's bigger issues to worry about, unless your gay and want to get married, and thats fine.
But come on, do you think that the other guy, Grumpy McCain would have done even this -- Hell No!

If McCain would've won the LGBT community would be waiting at least another 4 years for even extended benefits. Be happy for now, you'll get full rights soon. Its only a matter of time. Celebrate! Its coming soon... let the man do his job!

Please. Don't be giving people a reason to dissent or else the man will never be able to get anything accomplished.

Let idiot ditto heads cry all they want.... alone! Like they actually care about your rights. They're just happy to hear people from the left be upset.

I'm very disappointed in Obama, he was supposed to solve everybody's problems by now! I bet if George Bush was in office he'd have fixed everything the day he was elected. Let's all vote republican next time, because Obama just isn't Mr. Fix-it.

Enough will never be done for the gays and lesbians until the damn Christians get out of the way.

Swing open the doors for Islam, impose Sharia law, I'm sure the Taliban will be kinder to the sodomites than the Christians.

Obama has a lot to deal with. In a world based on morals, everyone would have equality and equal rights as they are inherent to people at birth. Unfortunately, this country is based on democracy and money, and as we all know the priorities of the few do not always coincide with the priorities of the masses.

I think that members of the LGBT community (it's ironic that in preaching unity and equality, people are sectioned off into their own communities) should work on persuading the silent majority that they don't wish to threaten their ways of life, rather than get mad at the world for the way it is..

I absolutely HATE how ppl think that only a man and a woman should be able to get married. Love has no gender and no boundaries. In my opinion if you're in love you should be able to get married. I am young but I'm madly in love w/ my fiance who is also a female. We have been together for a long time and I fully intend on marrying her in a year or so no matter what that takes. No One should be able to tell another person who it is and is not okay to love!!!

Getting mad results in nothing except for, well, sitting at home and stewing. This moment has allowed us a great opportunity to stand up and make our voices heard. I am confident that our raised voices and collective action will be heard.
#1. Send Obama an email and tell him how disappointed you are: www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
#2. Call the white house to register your complaint: 202-456-1111
#3. Attend the Equality March in October http://nationalequalitymarch.com

    Do something about it!!

There are MORE IMPORTANT issues than the GLBT "community".

Keep in mind that you're raising the stakes very much. The Defense of Marriage Act was made as a compromise, to take the wind out of attempts to federally ban same-sex marriage.

If we try to federally legalize same-sex marriage, they will try to ban it. The Federal Marriage Amendment fell short just a little bit, of the majority needed for it to move on.

I think either would be a middle finger to federalism and state's rights. I see it as a bit wrong to legalize same-sex marriage in an area where most of the people oppose it - and I mean a strong majority, not just a fifty-two percent majority.

Let New England legalize same-sex marriage. Let the South ban it. This is the United States of America, but it's starting to seem like it's on the road to becoming a unitary "Republic of America," where all power lies in the federal government and local governments have very limited, meager powers.

There are many loopholes that need to be filled here. For instance, the memorandum for federal employees doesn’t help because DADT. Those in the military can’t admit they are homosexual and therefore can’t ask for benefits. Plus, it doesn’t include health care. I am especially appalled by the language used in DOMA as well. I have hopes though, we’ve been at this for many years and I do believe change will come under Obama, even if it does take his whole term.
