Unemployment Rate Rises in 48 States

The unemployment rate rose in all but two states last month, and in eight states it reached the highest level in the 34 years on record.

Michigan, hit hard by auto plant closures, had the highest unemployment in the country, the Labor Department said Friday, rising to 14.1% in May from 12.9% in April. It was the highest Michigan's unemployment has been since the early 1980s, when high energy prices and a rising dollar slammed the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Oregon's unemployment rate of 12.4% was the next highest in the country, and the highest for the state on records going back to 1976. Next was Rhode Island and South Carolina, each at a record 12.1%, and California, at a record 11.5%. North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Nevada also had record high unemployment rates.

In 16 states and the District of Columbia, the unemployment rate topped the nation's 9.4%; it was lower in 33 states. The two states with the lowest unemployment rates were North Dakota and Nebraska, whose farm economies have been shielded from job losses.

Payrolls were below year-earlier levels in 48 of the 50 states. The largest percentage decline was in Arizona, where the housing downturn has cut deeply into real-estate related work. It had 7.4% fewer jobs than a year earlier.

The national jobless rate has hit a quarter-century high of 9.4%. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other economists predict the U.S. unemployment rate will keep rising even if the recession ends later this year, since companies won't want to ramp up hiring until they feel certain their own sales and profits are on the rebound and any economic recovery will have staying power.

Even as their residents deal with a worsening job market, states are increasingly dipping into taxpayers' pockets to replenish their cash-starved coffers.

Faced with gaping budget holes, 23 states have raised taxes this year, and 13 more are considering doing so as they set out to approve 2009-2010 budget agreements, according to a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. In most cases, the tax increases come on top of cuts in public services.

The raises include income, sales and business taxes and take aim at everything from slot machine licenses to motel room taxes. Another popular target is excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco. New York, which estimated its budget gap at 29% in its 2010 budget, will charge 11 cents more on beer and wine. Similarly, seven states will raise the price of a pack of cigarettes anywhere between 2 cents and $1.

    • About The Recession, by Richard R. Blackston

I have a question for the directors of Wal-Mart, which is, as we all know, a multi-billion dollar store chain. Why can’t they bail out our beautiful country? I know Wal-Mart can do this if they really wanted to, they certainly have the buying power and moreover, if Wal-Mart did bail America out, shoppers everywhere would revere the store chain! In doing so, everyone wins! So my question to Wal-Mart is, don’t you think it’s time you give back to this country, after all this country has given to you? Without a doubt, if I had a billion dollars, I would bail America out! So I ask you Wal-Mart, why don’t you or why can’t you do this for America?!
Furthermore, America has many resources which can be used to fix the deficit! I ask for the best country, pop, and rock stars to pull together and make CDs plus perform concerts to raise money to help bail our beautiful country out of its debts! It is time to stop pointing fingers at where the problem began, and start banning together while being creative toward fixing the problems, before it’s too late!
I call on the richest people in our country as well as the most famous. Lets take action to save our heritage before it's too late! The saying is true, there is some trash on the road, now someone should clean it up!

      Sincerely,
      Richard R. Blackston

I feel you I quit my VERY well paying job recently b/c my boss thought it would be ok to constantly harass me with nasty e-mails and texts at all times of day or night b/c he figured with the job market the way it is I would never leave. No job is worth being harassed and treated bady for, of course I am probably going to have to move back home next month but honestly I would rather do that than working in hell everyday!

I can't quit my job. Mortgage, kids in college, vehicle payments, pet food, all the usual bullshit. I guess I'm living the American Dream. I suppose it is a good thing that I really like my job.

Numlock, are you working? I realize it is not my business, but I think it would be unfair for him to toss you if you aren't working. But then again, life isn't what you could call fair.

      Good luck.

    • No responses to the highest unemployment rate in 34 years, but 113 responses to Obamas treatment of the GBLT community.

So, nobody here has a mortgage to pay? Anyone in college worried about getting a job when they get out of college, at least one where you don't have to serve french fries to someone? NO medical conditions that need treatment, you know, medical insurance does come in handy when that happens, again, related to job issues.

I was fired and harrassed out of my job because I'm gay!
In South Bend Indiana an empolyer can fire an empolyee simply because the empolyer knows or suspects the empolyee is gay!

In these times we need all americans to work!!! Therefore gay rights are importent! I care about the recession too!!! You shopuld care about any and all civil rights............
