Hanna, thank you for the necessary astringency of your last post about the "Neda" video and the construction of a martyr mythology in the blogosphere’s reporting on Iran. I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the entire unedited Neda video on YouTube; it feels too close to a snuff movie. Assuming this graphic clip really does document a young woman’s death at the hands of paramilitary snipers—something we lack the reporting to confirm—what gives us the right to watch it and forward to and fro as proof of our solidarity with the forces of democracy and reform in Iran (something that, as you point out, Mousavi is far from representing)? I wouldn’t want my own death, or that of someone I loved, to be instrumentalized in that way. (We don't, for example, treat the deaths of U.S. soliders abroad as YouTube-able moments.) And the fact that “Neda” is a young and pretty woman somehow adds to the ickiness of disseminating the scene of her murder (if that is indeed what the clip shows) as a propaganda tool.

    • THAT IS WHY I CREATED THIS CLIP WITHOUT THE SHOOTING...

As humanists we are saddened and enraged by humanity's shortcomings: in this case, the abject and repugnant assassination of a young woman.

What makes Neda so special are the circumstances of her death. Random and cruel, her execution goes against all basic human instincts and those values our species takes pride in defending.

This collective of artists and musicians is reacting appropriately to this assault and affront to all that is sacred in existence : life, freedom, dignity and respect.

      Dear Arcticspirit,

We all NEED to watch these videos, for they will make us stronger and will expose the true nature of the "religion of peace". I have watched how the friendly palestinians rip an Israeli soldier to peaces with their bare hands, threw his body out of the 3rd story window and more "peaceful civilians" continued the ripping on the street. Everyone who got their hands bloody, would throw them in the air and dance and pray to Allah. I have seen a video of Chechen "freedom fighters" cut off a Russian soldier's head - slowly, deliberately - that was a gruesome vid - and I couldn't sleep a few nights after that. I made myself watch it - so that I wouldn't have a single shred of a poisonous liberal appologetic pretense that these people are anything but barbarians, that they deserve no sympathy or pity - until they learn to show these same emotions to those they elected as their enemies. I know, I know - sounds too reactionary, too violent. I've lived in the middle-east - I saw the conflict with my own eyes - heck - I participated in it!!! I can tell you stories - stories of humanity at the cost of young soldier's lives. Stories of military code on one side - and total disregard for human life on another. You can guess which two sides I am talking about - and surmise who had exhibited which. But it case you're taken by the liberal propaganda machine, financed largely by the Arabs - Israel is the humanitarian and the Hamas is the inhuman - it just takes a normal person to see the truth behind islam!!!

    • I can't seem to bring my self to watch it either. I know it's a brutal death of a woman undeserving of such. It's not fiction. It's death, on film. I haven't seen it on CNN or other places.

And all I can do is pray for their country and her family.

I don't care to know where the fuck you came from and you shouldn't spend too much time figuring out where the fuck everyone else comes from either.

America is a collection of people with different roots, such as you and me. So have some fucking respect and no need to ridicule your fellow American. And, welcome to the 21st century.

Just for the record, my roots are not from fucking Egypt...

    • Nadir - you still didn't own up to your Arab roots - but they are showing, no matter what you say!!! You may call me a racist - I don't give a shit how you qualify me - I am an American, one who is naturalized too - born in USSR, lived under a repressive socialist regime - and I am not hiding it - like you!!! I am also free to speak my mind - with you liking it or not - that's part of AMERICA - you're no longer in Egypt to shut me up!!! That's where you're from, isn't it? So what, "darling" - you mad at the great Shaitan too? And Israel is also a problem for you? C'mon - let the ugly bile spill - I know you're full of it!!! I know you like Hussein - he is a muslim Arab - and he certainly acts in the interests of the muslims and Arabs.
Lastly - you hide behind my democracy - I re-read my posting - there is nothing racist or hateful there - I am trying to protect my country - my homeland and my people. The problems with terrorists and their leftist appologizers is that they will use our own democracy, our own freedom of religion and of speech against us. You are an Arab first - and your statements show it. You consider middle-east your home - I don't have a problem with it - not at all - I just wish you take your ass back home, instead of doing your deeds here in America - the one you despise so much!!!

    • From what I understand the 4th of July hotdog party has been called off. Thats a good start. I am deciding weather Obama's responce falls under the old saying: "A day late and a Dollar short" Or "Better late than never" The words he said were like reading my mind or my blog post's or hundreds of thousands of Blog post's just like mine. Or maybe it was Neda who got to him and woke him up! He mentiond her twice. in his news Confrence. He was asked weather he recived a lot of pressure from John McCain and others he replied with a smile. "What do you think" Reglardless of what woke him up I hope he stays awake. When the leaders of the world want to start to act like Hitlers or little Hitlers the best thing they could here from America is Scilence. It does not matter weather you are Republican or Democrat nobody wants to see American Blood spilled to Stop a Hitler. witch is why the last time the Real Hitler commited the Murdering of innocent got to continue for so long. There was a Lesson to be learned from that war and our sitting on our hands for so long. The invention of the internet this time will open our eyes to all the killing of the Nedas much sooner than before. The World now can see that the brutal un elected Government of Iran is a Hitler. it is inevitable he will be taken out. How long we wait is the Question. The soonen we act the less Nedas have to Die. We all hate to be forced to be the Police of the World. We all agree that is the case. President Clinton used US forces to go in to Bosniea to Stop the Murdering of Thousands of Muslams and no one refers to that as Meddeling. President Obama must do the same....It is time to lead Mr. President

You're making it way too easy for me...

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT MY BACKGROUND IS!!! unless you're a racist and a bigot: a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion. Which you clearly are.

Now that you qualified yourself as such, your opinion HERE OR ANYWHERE in the civilized world is invalid and irrelevant. So do everyone a favor and just vanish.

    • There goes Nader - an Arab american (if american at all) - telling us who fucked up... No Nadir - it was Clinton that missed repeated opportunities to take out Osama. It was Carter who fist pussied out with Iranians. It was Clintons who didn't adequately answer for the Khobar towers, the Cole bombing, two embassies in muslim Africa, etc, etc, etc. Too busy stickin a cigar you know where... It was Clinton to start the housing bubble that finally blew the economy to shreads. And if was your fellow arab Hussein Obama who quadruppled our deficit, bankrupting the future generations of Americans - with no effects on the economy but to send it to an even deeper shithole!!! Blame Bush all you want - but NK's Kim wouldn't be fucking with us now. Obama is afraid to board the ship - and the world knows it and we're a laughing stock. And once the nuclear materials fall into the hands of the highest bidder - Al Queda - we'll have a "nuclear event" on our hands - Obama will be able to suspend the constitution alltogether and usurp all the power. Wow - that sounds too fucking scary to even contemplate - but is it impossible - the way he is going no - it is not only possible - it is likely!!! Mark my words - he will go down in history as the single worst president, one whose damage will be felt for a century!!!

    • Now, now. It will be very difficult to overthrow a tyrannical theocracy, as Islam is part of the fabric of the culture in Iran- it is more than just a government, it is a fanatical belief system that rewards murder and mayhem. (thanks, jiminy, for those Koran verses.) This in no way is against those who are peaceful adherents, it is speaking out against those who take Islam literally, and carry out what Islam commands them.

    • The fact of the matter is that the US is in no position to do anything but offer words of condemnation and outrage. Our country is going through major economic challenges right now, not to mention the 2 wars and the North Korean dilemma (bigger fish).

Do you now understand? or should we bring up the fact that the past 8 years have crippled the fuck out of this country, and we're in no fucking position to fuck with anyone.

Get it through your arrogant heads and stop sounding so fucking stupid.

This regime kills the opposition on the streets of Tehran and our president's response is an invite on our day for celebration of freedom. WTF!!!

All this but kissing Pres. Obama is doing is going to back fire! Who cares what the Iranian murderous government thinks about the US. We have the responsibly to condemn humans rights violations!

I bet Iranian-Americans are going to have a lot to say about this disgusting invitation.

Right on Zurma....right on Freedom Fighting People of Iran....I have never seen more bravery than I have in the last few days on the web....bravery from men I expected but the courage from every day Women have to make all of you women proud .....Now here are a few facts 1-the Green leader ran on 2 basic platform's one was more Freedom for the women of Iran and two Better relations with the West! Now all I here from this Liberal Current Blogg is how that we all should look the other way... I don't get it here ...more than any other time in the history of the Woman's Movment, Women are Fighting and Dieing for the Womans cause, and all you liberal Women on here can say is how Obama did the right thing. First by cutting the leggs out from under the green Movement by saying both partys are basically the same and the Green Leader is not all he is advertised to be! Then by not saying anything....Then when obama gets Pressured from Europe leaders, pressured from McCain and Pressured from all those who saw Neda die then you say he also did the exact right thing Then when in the near future when the leaders in Europe drag obama kicking and screaming in to forming a Collition at the UN to do what Clinton did and come to the aid of Muslams bieng slaughterd in the street you will say at that time Obama was right on the money again....give me a break! Time to be a Leader not a Follower every day cost thousands of Lives.....

    • Unfortunately it took this film to get our President to say anything negative towards the injustices in Iran. Too bad he's still allowing Iran's leaders to come over for hotdogs on American Independence Day. Irononically he's doing this hotdog diplomacy on the day where we declared ourselves free while he is working to restrict those freedoms.

    • I cannot adequately express my rage at the Basij and those who sanction such acts against their ''subjects" (that's what those in power consider those who are not) in order to maintain ''control'', and there-by killing such innocents as Neda...!

[Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi vowed Sunday night to keep up the protests, charging the June 12 election was a fraud....
The former prime minister, a longtime loyalist of the Islamic government, also called the Basij and military "our brothers" and "protectors of our revolution and regime." He may be trying to constrain his followers' demands before they pose a mortal threat to Iran's system of limited democracy constrained by Shiite clerics, who have ultimate authority....]

If it were in my power (mercifully, it is not), those who perpetrated and sanctioned as well as committed such acts would have their knee-caps shot out, their balls spiked to a tree stump, and given a butter-knife to cut themselves free ( after all, I'm not completely heartless)...Bwahahahahahaaa.... in a pigs eye, motherf**kers!

    • I disagree with Dana Stevens. Snuff films generally portray the actual murder of people for the purpose of the viewer's entertainment. This video does contain graphic footage of a woman is clearly dying, so one relationship is reached.

Are there some individuals that would gain some kind of morbid pleasure from watching the death of Neda Soltani? Yes, but I seriously doubt that the person behind the camera intended for that to happen. They certainly didn't expect a nearby woman to be shot, bleeding to death. It just happened, and the footage was captured.

Association doesn't define intention in this case. Like with the Vietnam War photo that jiminycricket
posted, viewers are free to choose to be entertained or horrified by this video showing the death of Neda Soltani. What's most important is that this video is brought to light and that people know that THIS is what's going on right now. Thanks to the Internet, that won't be a problem.

I think it should be shown, so that her death won't be in vain and her memory can live on.

    • Personally, I think that YES, it's POSSIBLE that Neda's death was staged, she COULD have been shot by someone nearby whom she trusted but needed a "victim" for their cause.

Lord knows that Hizbollah and Hamas have done that for years.

But I tend to be skeptical in this case. Having watched the whole film, you can hear the anguish in the cries of the people around her.

If it were true, by definition, the vid is NOT a "snuff film" since it would have been shot for propagandistic purposes, not entertainment.

I was in Venezuela, very nearby when a woman was murdered by pro-government thugs. She died EXACTLY the same way Neda did--I mean it was hauntingly similar.

It went viral within Venezuela, and the government tried to say that it was staged by the opposition, they had killed their own person.

Until news stations blew up the image of the killer and publicized it. A few weeks later the same guy was filmed standing by government officials at a funeral.

When killers fired guns from Puente Llaguno into the unarmed marchers in Caracas, the government accused the opposition of "manufacturing" the situation. AGain, videos revealed who the killers were. Eventually, the government changed its story and decided they were shooting "in self defense" (against unarmed marchers). They even erected a statue in their honor as true revolutionary heroes.

Sometimes the truth is exactly what you see, exactly what we all thought it was. I think that's the case with Neda.

    • "what gives us the right to watch it and forward to and fro as proof of our solidarity with the forces of democracy and reform in Iran (something that, as you point out, Mousavi is far from representing)?"

      uh, let's see.

This is the regime that says the Holocaust never happened.

Is it wrong to roll the films showing the hundreds of thousands of dead jews that prove the existence of the death camps and the brutal genocide in order to counter the propaganda of the murderous thugs?

Do you think the dead Jews would be furious at us for fighting against the ongoing anti-semitic hate mongerers who plan to exterminate more Jews in Israel?

Or do you think they would want us to learn from their deaths to save others?

      Ooooh. Tough questions!

Well, golly, now the same islamofascist regime tells us that they are a true democracy and should be allowed to possess nuclear technology and would a good steward to that dangerous knowledge.

And we have the images of Neda dying at their hands, but the good hearted and empty headed liberals are questioning whether or not we should broadcast that video?

Hmmm. Do you think Neda would be furious that we posted her video revealing what a bunch of murderous tyrants she was opposing?

Or do you think she'd want us to have irrefutable proof that when they say they are a true and peaceful democracy, they are LYING?

so..you'd prefer that the world not know that you died at the hands of murderous thugs...and your life would have been snuffed out and no one would have been the wiser.

Let me ask you one question: are you an organ donor?

Or are you keeping those to yourself also?

Why did the Muslim terrorists in Beslan target schools?

Why do the Muslim terrorists in Afghanistan target girls' schools?

      Because they CAN. With impunity.

And because that is the POINT of terrorism: to strike fear in the hearts of the opponents so that they know that ANYONE can and will be killed mercilessly.

They are not "idiots", they are "terrorists". They are psychopathic killers, you can't try to reason with them (listen up Obama), you can't "understand" them.

    • How many times have we seen the Kennedy assassination Video? It is more graphic than this. It has been shown over and over, but never considered a Snuff Film. It is an unfortunate reality. It is HISTORY. These shocking videos bring the reality to the price of change. We all watch the news and listen to the words of how many are killed, and hear it as if it was the score of a baseball game. Videos bring us the reality... a reality that we will remember. It's not the video, it's the moment that was captured in it. Bless ALL the protesters... DEAD and ALIVE.
