How does featuring work? [current.com blog]

We've had several questions about how stories get picked for the homepage, so I thought it would be good to clear up any confusion that may be lingering. Get all of the details and a break down of our featured sections after the jump:

    Hey Mario,

This has interested me for a while. In regards to:

"Community picks: this is noted by the “#1” and “#2” symbols, and the stories placed in these sections are the top two most popular stories as determined by the Current.com community on that channel. These are determined strictly based on popularity alone — a result of votes, views, comments, and shares on the submitted story."

Do you have the actual equation that goes along with calculating the ranking based on the "result of votes, views, comments, and shares on the submitted story"?

I know it's a rather technical question, but I think it's very relevant to really understanding how our submissions are ranked.

    Thanks! =)

If we are taking about the channels, It works fine so far!
If we are taking about the Current Home Page, The design it is just how it is. You guys want to put everything in one page. So that is the result anyways! Sometimes I go to the home page but I do not surf from there. I don't know why yet! The news page it is ok! I used to like the old design where the tags where posted in vertical order. It was just easy to surf through the tags sometimes. Now I hardly use it. Everything still works and I think the programmers are doing a great job on the channels.

Well, this just blows my conspiracy theory to crap!

I don't want to get too detailed, but let's just say my theory had something to do with Scientology, a Sasquatch, and Bette Midler. I guess it all seems a bit bizarre now. Actually, I'm a little bit embarrassed.

what do you mean after the jump?

I'm tired of hearing about how Current "works". Honestly, the only thing that has brought me back to Current is infoMania and of course, I tune into the channel every now and again. But since the change about 4 months ago, Current is the last place I go for news features.

Seriously, Current does not "work" as it used to be several months ago....

~User-created content does not go on Tv anymore, and most users are saddened by so...

~Staff usually pull up most of the stories, and leaving them on "#1" for a long time, which does not allow more stories come up as rapid as the previous layout..

~Useless(rather pointless to post) stories have came to the top, or stay in one rank(usually around the top 10 stories) for a long time(maybe for several days)

~Newer stories would usually be much more harder to reach to the top, than it was in the previous layout....

Current isn't better than it was several months ago, it has been taken a step back, instead of a step forward...

@Current89, I know you have to admit it, that Current has overall has lost some of its value it once had(at least CurrentTv)

It's nice that current staffers take the time out of their day to explain al the new changes but isn't all this just a distraction from the real question at hand? How far does the new current stray from the old current, and does the philosophy of view created/view generated content even fit into this new site?

Hmm. I know that I am making more user generated content than ever before- (Interviews, editorials, I have some pods in the works...) So it would seem to me that if you think there is not enough user generated content on Current, you should make some!

I will say that sometimes things stick around the topics for way too long. I know the staff is busy but in my opinion the featured stories should be changed at LEAST once a day!

Yeah I wasn’t really paying attention when I wrote that last post. I really didn’t even want to discuss viewer created pods or whatever the heck it’s called in current.com land. Is there even a real overlap between the promotion of viewer created pods and viewer generated content (and just to clarify by content I mean news stories)?
To be honest I’ve never seen it. If anything a lot of fuss has been directed at featured current.tv ( non-viewer created )or current.com articles placed onto or over the voting system. The big change solidified this problem by turning a random occurrence, or annoyance to some, into full time, unending slap in the face to the old system of comment and vote. So the question remands, how far does current plan to stray from the original blueprint?
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out current has changed its game plan. So what’s the new niche current.com is trying to fill? Is current.com first and foremost a place to show case current.tv’s various interests or tv shows? Beyond that is current.com going to play host to various lifestyles or political groups through its system of channels? If that’s the case who creates the channels, viewers or staffers? Lastly does the voting system have a place in current if the site takes on a feudal system of curators, featured submitters and commenter’s?

I am specifically saying that ALL of the topics should be on Tv, not just one...

Making some(especially every hour) would not cover it...

Nothing could nor can replace Current News Tv, no matter how you shape it..

True, how long will Current continue to do this type of layout, it seems like they aren't even mentioning the original layout...Is it because they see this layout as a improvement?

I also want to know their main objective of this layout, instead of trying to distract us, with the sign of improvement, why not tell us why the REAL objective..

Seems this post moved elsewhere, but why hasn't any of staff actually responded to my(our) questions?
