Meet the man who is trying to shut down the Internet.... using Twitter

As you are probably aware China's new software censorship requirements are due to begin on July 1st. But not if this man and his twitter followers have anything to say about it.

Artist, government critic, blogger, Twitter pioneer, Ai Weiwei wants to shut down the internet for a day. He is probably best known for his work designing the "Bird Nest" in Beijing but now, Ai a huge social media fan is now trying to use twitter to rally his fellow country men to go offline in a silent protest of the censorship software. With over 300 million internet users in China this will be a tall order. But as we have seen since the Iran election the power of Twitter is a force to be reckoned with...........

that's a dumb protest. Sorry weewee

I was appalled to read that all PCs will have censorship software added to them! I understand blocking porn but to deny people the basic right of connecting with the outside world seems very extreme. I believe the Green Dam is blocking facebook, twitter, etc. I think Ai Weiwei is courageous to stand up to the government, especially since he is well known and the consequences are unforeseen. I kind of want to not use the internet that day as well ... a global protest would be meaningful.

If Iranians protest and model of community journalism via Twitter inspires Chniese students to do the same, we may be headed for a second "Fall of the Berlin Wall:" where a bunch of suppressed nations see their citizens using the internet to fell the regime and gain basic freedoms.

First off, I HATE Twitter. This protest isn't going to matter, it's Twitter. I agree that it could inspire a mass of people but do you think a bunch of Chinese citizens are ready to take to the streets like the Iranians in the name of free, uncensored internet usage?

By not being on the internet for a day, you've accomplished nothing more than some energy saving, if that. How many of his followers will still be doing something on their computers that day even if they aren't on the internet? The protests in Iran can't be compared to this, people are dieing for their votes! If Weiwei can get the Chinese government to listen, I'll start using Twitter.

Anybody notice the picture behind him? It looks to me like a middle finger pointed at our White House. Sorry man. You lost my support.

May the force be with you sir.

One thing keeping me from moving to China (I live in Korea) is the fact that I won't be able to use Google or Youtube in the country... no joke.

I'm not a big fan of government enforced "morality".

Some of you were actually "appalled" or surprised by this? ITS CHINA. Havent you heard about the little place called Tibet and the way China has handled that. Look at the history, people have been protesting for years in china and the Tibetans are the perfect example. Struck down with the iron fist. People not going on the internet IS HARDLY "TAKING TO THE STREETS". This is not a protest its a boycott of the Chinese internet. Sounds like a great publicity move by Ai Weiwei

Isn't a protest meant to cause some sort of interference or visible statement? What is everybody going to rally behind--a graph marking a dip in bandwidth usage for the day?

Hurl some monitors out into the streets or something. Bring down some Chinese TLD servers. DoS attack some government sites.

The only government officials who are going to be affected are the Chinese network administrators who are going to have the single easiest day of work in their entire lives.

Twitter is lame, how bout you give me a ridiculously small amount of characters to say something so I sound like a 5th grade remedial student with half a brain missing because of poor fetal development. I miss the days of IRC, fuck your blogs and your stupid paragraph that CNN throws up on the screen every 5 minutes to show how many people are mindlessly watching the news they pick for you... I don't know maybe you care to hear more about Jon and Kate and their 8 children they decided to have through fertilization drugs even though in a lot of peoples opinions the world is already a little too populated. Maybe all you twitter fans should go suck Ashton and Demi's dicks

First of all, computer manufactuers, most notably Dell and HP, are installing the censorship software before the Chinese public even has access to these same computers. Secondly, that's my middle finger flipping the White House off!!

o.o even if you don't use your internet,it doesn't mean you don't pay for it or a bill for it won't come o.o

I don't get the point of the protest?

I understand forming a group to try to develope a software that bypasses any attempt to censor any type of content but to not use the internet for a day won't do any, well err theres one good thing lol no stupidslow internet.
