A two-year-old Chinese boy, whose father taught him how to smoke, now smokes a pack a day.

He's so hooked on ciggies that he throws tantrums if he can't have them.

His father believed that smoking would help alleviate the boy's hernia pain and gave him his first cancer stick at 18 months. The boy was too young and small to have an operation on his hernia at the time.

    • He shoulda given the kid some weed! At least with weed, you can choose to smoke it or eat it; plus weed is just like medicine so its far far more logical. Who ever said smoking a cigarette relieved pain anyway? It never did for me and I smoked for nine years!!

    • smoking laws are weird, even in the US you simply need to be 18 to BUY cigarettes, the laws for actually smoking them are more lax, often allowing kids as young as 14 to smoke. china's smoking problem is an epidemic, about a year ago i read in a Nat. Geo. that even most Chinese doctors smoke.

In terms of objective reality, it's not. This is an *extremely* minor issue in the grand scheme of things - unless there are any psychotics in the room who'd like to claim that big swathes of China's toddler population are smokers.

Far more people, with far more opportunities to provide healthy lives to children, cause irreperable harm by imposing poor diet. It is pointless to get indignant and het up about a nano-issue instead of something of actual importance to the wider world.

But hey, go right ahead and have yourself some good old angst at the nasty foreigners.

As bad as it sounds I have to agree that giving a child a cigarette is no worse than giving them overly processed hormone laden foods which are just as addictive and detrimental to young developing bodies. Cigarettes are just more taboo than junk food in our culture.

BTW dont get me wrong Im not condoning what this dad did, Im just saying that when you break down why cigarettes are bad they're no worse than half the junk food parents feed their children on a daily basis.
