'Spaceship' boosts anti-whaling force against Japan's might

Japan has asked Australia to prevent the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin leaving port to harass its whalers in the Antarctic next summer, but the plea may have little effect.

The anti-whaling activists plan to upgrade their fleet from an ageing, former North Atlantic fisheries patrol boat to include another ship - something out of the future. The global speedboat Earthrace would head south under Sea Shepherd colours next summer, the group's leader Paul Watson said.

"It looks like a spaceship. It can do 40 knots and dive under waves completely. We'll be using it to intercept and block harpoons."

In 61 days last year Earthrace circled the globe fuelled by biodiesel. The New Zealand owner/skipper, Pete Bethune, said he decided to become involved because "this is happening in my backyard and it really pisses me off. I'm going to make a stand."

He said he was adding half a tonne of Kevlar to the vessel to toughen it against the ice. It had the endurance to go half way round the world on a tank of fuel.

"They won't get away from me," he said.

Earthrace's role was unveiled as the International Whaling Commission heard that Sea Shepherd's protests endangered the lives of whalers in the Southern Ocean last summer when the Steve Irwin was involved in two collisions.

"These are highly dangerous, and it can only be described as a miracle that there has been no death or large-scale accident to date," said a Japanese delegation member, Jun Yamashita.

"We cannot tolerate such audacity," Mr Yamashita told the commission. "We ask for

all appropriate measures, including a ban on the ship from leaving port, so that we can prevent these acts from being repeated."

Mr Watson, who is not permitted inside the meeting, said the Steve Irwin was soon to leave Brisbane for Hobart after a $500,000 refit. Its buckled hull plates had been repaired, and it was fitted with a powerful water cannon on the bow to match the whalers'.

He dubbed next summer's campaign Operation Waltzing Matilda and has adopted a symbol with a kangaroo wearing a pirate's eye patch.

Cool boat, bio diesel, wave piercing, and looks badass. However, I can't stand Paul Watson. Guy's an irresponsible jerk.

Wow, VERY COOL FUTURISTIC SHIP. Although in my opinion, those guys are Dbags. Imagine how many human lives they could be helping if they decided to give time (&$) to them instead of whales...

I hope this turns into another midway with the whales on the winning side

I love the sea shepherd but after watching the show I realize that they are not insane enough.

The japanese government doesn't give a fuck about anything but money. The Japanese people have been brainwashed into thinking that the Shepherd crew are terrorists.

I'm in favor of people doing anything necessary to end the illegal wailing in our oceans before it is too late.

Using technology to this extent for eco activism is the way to go. Great move--also will be a good way to publicise cause - photo worthy and action packed.

The Japanese government is not violating the law at all. If people have an issue with it, they should respond with education and work to change the international law as oppose to committing dangerous and illegal acts. By their actions, they have turned an environmental issue into a nationalism issue for the Japanese. Furthermore, the Irwin family had nothing to do with the naming the of the Steve Irwin.

I admit, I enjoy the show...if nothing but to see people with no little or no training nearly getting killed dat in and day out. Its like watching "Jackass" with cult tendencies on the high seas. But what truly fascinates if you replaced whales with fetuses or Islam...how many people here would be supporting their actions?...

Actually, the are violating several laws. First, they are hunting whales in an international whale sanctuary. Second, they kill fin whales (among others). Fin whales are an endangered protected species. Oh, and then there is the whole International Whaling Commission moratorium on commercial whaling. Yes, they get around that treaty by writing research on the side of the whaling ships. Please.

I do agree with you that education is a huge component of this. But it isn't the only one. Most people around the world have had no idea that whales were still being killed in the thousands each year by Japan, Norway and a few other countries.

Hey Puke, most people don't support the senseless slaughter of harmless creatures...get over it.
You say the Japanese are not violating the law, perhaps thats true if you believe that the butchering of these magnificent animals is actually for scientific research and not for profit, however to believe that, you would need the reasoning ability of about a 5 year old.
As to the flimsy attempt to link this to Islam or a womans right to determine whether or not to procede with a pregnacy...there simply is no common thread, except perhaps in your head.

A MAN OF HIS WORDS NOW ALL HE HAS TO DO IS SAIL "BETWEEN" THE WHALES AND THE harpooners!!!!!

"Even so, the great size and speed of blues (at up to 25 knots -- or 29 miles per hour -- they went faster than whaling ships follow."

I realize now that none of you people actually have a clue about what you are taking about at all. Exploiting a loop hole in a law, or in this case a treaty, is in itself, perfectly legal. Furthermore, violating a treaty doesn't not automatically mean that an action was illegal. I am not trying to defend whaling in the lease. However, the actions of these people on the Steve Irwin are reprehensible. Just because they are trying to stop the slaughter of whales, does not in anyway justify their extremely dangerous and illegal acts. How are their harassment acts any less objectionable than nutbag right to lifers harassing anyone that goes near a clinic? In their eyes, they are just as justified.

So once the whales are saved...who is next on their list? All commercial fishermen? Maybe go after anything that uses sonar? Then we can go after Tidal Power supplies cause no one wants to effect the ecology of off shore areas...and of course off shore oil has to stop...

Am I seriously the only person that has seen this show and thought of L. Ron Hubbard's Sea Org?
