Gay DNC fundraiser filled with frustration: "No One Is Happy Now"
Gay rights activists have complained that Obama has not followed through on his promises to repeal a law banning their open service in the military, to do away with a federal marriage law or to champion their causes from the White House. During his first five months, he's taken incremental steps that have little real effect and left some people feeling betrayed.
But he still felt comfortable sending Vice President Joe Biden to a Democratic National Committee fundraiser Thursday evening with gay and lesbian donors.
"I hope you don't doubt the president's commitment," Biden said during a 20-minute address at the gathering. Assuring donors and other guests that Obama would keep the nation focused on "the unfinished business of true equality for all our people," the vice president said, "I don't blame you for your impatience."
Some gay donors had called for a boycott after Obama's Justice Department, in a court filing, compared gay marriages to incest.
"I don't think it's an appropriate time to be raising money. No one is happy now," said Richard Socarides, who advised President Bill Clinton on gay issues and did not plan to attend the event. "On gay rights, the country is already in the age of Obama, but he's governing from the Clinton era."
Obama issued a presidential memorandum that expands some federal benefits to same-sex partners, but not health benefits or pension guarantees. He has allowed State Department employees to include their same-sex partners in certain embassy programs already available to opposite-sex spouses.
But that remains far short of his campaign rhetoric.

Finally, some real news! Too bad it isn't very good.

What people need to understand about Obama is that in the end he is a pragmatic politician. He never wants to offend anyone, because when you burn bridges, it makes getting things done down the line that much harder. He says what it takes to get into office and then he does only enough to stay popular. He just has to prove that he's better than the Republicans (cause that's soooooo hard). Welcome to the magical world of far right American politics. Enjoy the pragmatism. If you don't like it, make a third party.

He has been pretty silent about this huge issue that needs to be fixed. I am supporter of him but he is lagging on certain things sadly. But I am hopeful for the future.

I LOL every time Obama sends me a new "CONTRIBUTE NOW" email... Puh-leeze. Results first, POTUS (or is it POS?).

I am glad the LGBT community is boycotting the DNC. It is very important that we hit the politicians where it hurts: the money belt.
The DNC has been dragging us along for 20 years. The United States was once celebrated as a human rights leader, and yet we trailing the Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Ireland, Spain, and others on equal rights for gays and lesbians.
The DNC will not get any more of my money until I see results. If they can't do it, I will run myself.

Obama has a lot on his plate right now. I'm not suggesting that it's not an important issue or that it hasn't been a long time coming, but it is still relatively early in hopefully his first term. I would be shocked beyond belief if Obama followed through on all of his campaign promises at this point, but I can certainly see the frustration with what little he has done thus far. Time will tell. Let's hope it's sooner rather than later.

He really should condone gay marriage. With his outrageous spending and uncontrolled inflation, all areas of government will need all the extra tax money they can muster. The "gay tax" should produce billions in the very short term, that would pay maybe three days worth of interest on this ridiculous defecit!!
-
Every LGBT should be happy! Happy that Obama is on the right road. Obama already extended benefits to Federal Employees! Which pretty much screams to the community that, "Hey, pst, I'm on your side and we'll get it done."
Every movement in America goes through phases, so the public and non-supporters can get used to the idea. I'm telling ya - Gay Rights are coming, faster then you think, if the Gay community would be grateful for the progress that they already have made.
It would be right to thank President Obama
Remember that this is also a state issue, kinda like Pot.
If GLBT are ever gonna be allowed full rights, its gonna be under Obama. He has a lot to unravel for the community that Bush worked so hard to suppress and put down.
Public opinion is changing, but you cannot rush something like this, Be Patient or else you'll seem whiny and will give haters another reason to hate! -
I agree with all the comments stating that Obama only does enough to stay popular, he tries to hard not to offend anyone, and that we need a third party in America to avoid this kind of governing.
I'm sick of choosing the lesser of two evils. We need a major change in our government.

I can understand why the LGBT community would be starting to feel impatient; perhaps even ignored by Obama. Its a tough one for me because although Im not gay I support full and equal rights for LGBT Americans. I was and still am an Obama supporter but before that I am a supporter of the American ideals of liberty, justice, and equality for all. I understand that the president has a lot on his hands especially with dealing with Iran, N.Korea, the economy, and Afghanistan. But he needs to realize that Americans come first. He cant be the leader of the free world when he knows that there is gross inequality and injustice in his own country. Perhaps it is time for his supporters and the media to start putting pressure on Obama to follow through with his promises or he will be looked at as just another politician.
