Iraq Controls Baghdad as U.S Troops Leave

"BAGHDAD - Iraqi forces assume formal control of Baghdad and other cities on Tuesday after American troops hand over security in urban areas in a defining step toward ending the U.S. combat role in the country.

Fireworks, not bombings, colored the Baghdad skyline late Monday, and thousands attended a party in a park where singers performed patriotic songs. Loudspeakers at police stations and military checkpoints played recordings of similar tunes throughout the day, as Iraqi military vehicles decorated with flowers and national flags patrolled the capital.

"All of us are happy — Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day," Waleed al-Bahadili said as he celebrated at the park. "The Americans harmed and insulted us too much."
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared a public holiday and proclaimed June 30 as "National Sovereignty Day."

By Tuesday, all but a small number of American soldiers will have left Baghdad and other urban areas for bases outside cities, such as the giant Camp Victory complex on the western edge of Baghdad or Forward Operating Base Marez on the outskirts of Mosul.

Iraqi officials formally take control of the cities at midnight, a handover that filled many citizens with pride but also trepidation that government forces are not ready and that violence will rise. Shiites fear more bombings by Sunni militants; Sunnis fear that the Shiite-dominated Iraqi security forces will give them little protection. "

Are mustaches the only approved facial hair of the Iraqi police and guard? Hehehe.

Seriously though, this seems like a good step forward. Let's hope things keep under control there...

Agreed. One line caught my eye:
"The Americans harmed and insulted us too much."

Here in America I know a few people who still think that they entirety of the middle east are terrorists and the only reason we're fighting this war is because they all inflicted terrorism on us. But this does look like a good step forward. Let's hope it will continue to be a good thing.

"The U.S. has not said how many troops will be in the cities in advisory roles, but the vast majority of the more than 130,000 U.S. forces remaining in the country will be in large bases scattered outside cities."

So US military personnel now face a slightly longer commute to their shady, probably illegal, poorly planned war and we celebrate. Awesome.

It will be interesting to see what will happen. I hope that the Iraqi security forces can step up to the task and perform it well and I also hope that they think better of us for it.

This must go down as some of the best news I have read in a while. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Whats surprising is the lack of additional media coverage on the issue. Mcain said we'd be there for another twenty years. Whats up with the silence??? Are we EMBARRASSED?!? But seriously, Hold your breath on this one..... it could get ugly.

@AugustIX on twitter says "haha RT @owillis RT @politicalcrunch: Cheney was right. Iraqis are cheering US troops. #p2 #tcot (via @ProgressivePam)"

Aww, isn't it nice that our presence can unify even the most fundamentally different groups of people?

Cheney says this is a mistake-even though his administration set the date. The last time he had something positive it was a bowel movement.
Let's get our guys home where they belong; and this ime let us take care of them.

Hopefully it is winding down to a closure. A full closure. We have definitely overstayed our welcome and these people should be ready to lead now. Light guidance will trump an overwhelming presence in the future. It makes me sick when I think of how long they where out there. The only loose end to tie would be that one of a missing bin laden and all intel leads us to believe that he is not in Afghanistan. Perhaps we should check his families' native Saudi Arabia.

They are not leaving Iraq. They are still there. The Iraqi's hate them, like the man said they have had enough insults and abuse from the Americans and so the story goes the great liberators are sitting outside of the city limits waiting to be invited back in.

Why do librards hate America so much? What does Cheney have to do with it - take some laxatives and relax. Some Iraquis will be happy, some hate us, some recognize that we liberated them from one of the worst tyrants in history, some have received opportunity they would have never seen. How things unfold is not upto your dumb cool-aid drinking chants - or your messiah's protruding finger. It's about who is interested in civil unrest in Iraq and if the Iraqi guard can in fact perform, or will they run and hide at the first sign of danger. Iran and Al Queda are both huge destabilizing forces in Iraq - each pulling their own direction - Shia supremacy vs. Sunni Fundamentalism. The rest are caught in between. Our troops have performed a heroic duty - whether you agree with this war or not - and will continue to put their asses into the line of fire as needed - for which they deserve recognition and our support. So stop your bitching - this could be good - this could get ugly - but your lying sack of shit messiah had nothing to do with it - as he continues to break the campaign promisses - you continue to worship... Pathetic!!!

I posted on this topic last night and will paste that response again below. But I want to comment beforehand in response to a few posts above. We Americans and our politics.

We can't all agree on anything. Rep, Dem, hawks, liberals - the list is categorical. We all disagree on what needs to be done, what we have done and why. Well friends, that's America for ya. Each of us get to run our mouth anyway we choose, and not suffer for it. Right & wrong depends on what you're trying to accomplish and how you look at it. Different strokes.

But ever since we dumped the kings tea we've had to fight for everything we've gotten; including the right to remain here. The people that run our govt. are there because we put them there. If you don't like an official or what he/she does you have only to wait a year or 3, vote, and they're gone. This system works. We're not perfect - we're not going to be. We make mistakes. But even those most vocal in our population don't go anywhere else, do they? It ain't great. But I gave it 4 years of my life and wouldn't trade it for any other. Would you?

    My previous post:

It will be interesting to see how Iraq is doing 10 years from now. While their version is a little strange to me, it is a democracy of sorts. Compared to their neighbors in the region who has better?

But whether that will flower into a good thing remains to be seen. I think they tire of killing and being killed. I think they're ready for a rest. If they can just figure out a way to share the power amongst themselves, and the oil revenue, then they should be fine. And if that happens they may become the model we were hoping for when we went in to begin with. I mean at least they're not chanting God is great from the rooftops. The Taliban aren't trying to take them over. If they can get a little prosperity going, it will be a good deal. And long past due.

They're going to have trouble with their Kurds. And they'll keep right on having trouble with their Kurds. The Kurds are a nation to themselves but they no longer have their state. Rather, their population occupies part of Iraq, Turkey and Iran. The Kurds don't want to be Iraqi's, nor Turks, nor Iranians; they want to be Kurds. It's not going to be really peaceful in that area until that happens. That's why they demanded to be autonomous and fly their own flag.

But all in all, it's looking good.

Yes, the Iraqui's need to be in control of their own country. However, as the above report confirms, there was a certain peace that US troops brought that will be tested. Al Quedi is alive and trying to gain foothold in Iraq. We came so close to snuffing them out, but:

Yes, we can..... fail to squash terroritsts
Yes, we can..... Overspend and weaken the US citizen
Yes we can... totally fail to lead as we sck arse to socialism

Mirror - you're so off base... Iraq because we wanted to kill somebody? That is quite childish. We don't respect Arabs? What have they done to deserve the respect? Have they shown bravery in battle? No. Have they ran and hid at the first sign of danger? Yes. Are they too afraid to confront the extremist shit in their own societies, and by not doing so - in fact becoming accompices to fundamentalism? You bet! Have we not spent billions of dollars in financial aid for a shitload of Arab nations, same ones who fix the price of crude and rape us in return? You bet. Respect is a two-way street - and while America has been feeding the rest of the world, the ungrateful have been biting the hand that feeds them.
I was not born in this country - and I've lived under repressive regimes. I know the true difference between freedom and the lack of. Between Capitalism and Socialism. And I am here to tell you that America, with all of its imperfections, is still the best country in the world - by far. That everyone wants to come here to build a future (friends) and to destroy it (enemies). That Global Warming is supported by the world because it is designed to weaken us - and keep us down. That Obama is the single-worst thing that could have happened to this country - and that we will be undoing the damage for generations.
Messiah has no Balls to deal with N. Korea - Bush has nothing to do with it. There's probably nothing on the first ship - but by failing to board and inspect - we are sending a wrong message and setting a dangerous precedent. There will be nuclear material on the second or third - and it will then be too late. Kim Jon-il, despite promissing retaliation - will have to think hard before starting shit with us. But not if we show him our weak side - exactly what Obama is doing. In this case - he will publicly spit in our direction, as will Chavez, Ahmad-Madjob, Castro, Putin, etc. In fact - they already have - and we're already their laughing stock.

KABOOMM! Let's hope they blow themselves up so we won't have an excuse to send any more soldiers through the meat grinder. We have an impending socialist takeover, we need our troops back in the States to defend our country's citizens from Obama and his henchmen.

Liberals - Here, they always.. and man, I mean ALWAYS miss the boat: We went into NAM because of JFK - LIBERAL, we lost in NAM because of LBJ - LIBERAL we began our track record with IRAN and the MUSLIMS because of another Weak Liberal - CARTER. In 1991 the entire world went into Iraq. We were forced to go into IRAQ again in 2003 because of another LIBERAL - To busy getting Blowjobs..CLINTON we have to deal with North Korea because of (again LIBERALS) - COnsevative and Right Republicans are always spilling blood and cleaning up the mess because of LIBERALS - and now you think you clowns are on top of the food chain? YOU KILL YOUR OWN KIDS OUT OF SPITE and Self love - Who you clowns kidding? REAL American always have to clean up your messes.
