On the same day the Free Gaza boat "Spirit of Humanity" departed Cyprus for Gaza with human rights workers and three tons of medical aid, kids' toys and reconstruction kits, the International Red Cross has issued a report finding that 1.5 million Gazans are "trapped in despair" and calling on Israel to lift its blockade "as the first and most urgent measure to end Gaza's isolation and allow its people to rebuild their lives." This is the boat...THE SPIRIT OF HUMANITY.

The boat is now surrounded by Israeli War Ships.

Twenty-one human rights and solidarity workers representing eleven different countries were aboard. The passengers include Nobel laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The ship also carries three tons of medical aid, children’s toys, and rehabilitation and reconstruction kits for twenty family homes. Over 2,400 homes were destroyed in Gaza during the Israeli massacre in December/January, 490 of them by F-16 airstrikes, as well as 30 mosques, 29 educational institutions, 29 medical centers, 10 charitable organizations, and 5 cement factories. Each kit carries a small amount of supplies for a single family, representing sectors of civil society currently being blockaded by Israel: Agriculture, Building & Reconstruction, Education, Electricity, Health, and Water & Sanitation. Although over 4 billion dollars in aid was promised to Gaza in the aftermath of the Israeli onslaught, little humanitarian aid and no reconstruction supplies have been allowed in.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    30 JUNE 2009

"ALL WE WANT IS TO REACH GAZA. WE DO NOT SEEK A CONFRONTATION."
Activists aboard Gaza justice boat demand they be allowed to visit their friends & family in besieged Gaza, and deliver their cargo of medical supplies, children's toys, and reconstruction kits. They invite the world to join them.

(At Sea, 60km off the coast of the Gaza Strip) - Human Rights activists aboard the Free Gaza ship, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, today demanded that the Israeli Navy immediately stop threatening them.

“This aid is desperately needed by the people of Gaza,” said Mairead Maguire, winner of the Noble Peace Prize and Pacem in Terris Award for her work in Northern Ireland. “President Obama has called upon the Palestinians to abandon violence but Israel is denying them the right to non-violently resist the siege of Gaza.”

The unarmed justice ship departed Larnaca Port in Cyprus at 7:30am Monday with its crew of 21 human rights activists, humanitarian workers and journalists from 11 different countries, including Nobel laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The boat, a converted ferry, hopes to arrive in Gaza Tuesday afternoon, following a grueling 30 hour sea voyage.

At 1:30am, Israeli warships surrounded the small civilian boat and threatened to open fire if they did not turn around. When the activists refused to be intimidated, Israeli Occupation Forces began jamming their instrumentation, blocking their GPS, radar, and navigation systems. This jamming was in direct violation of international maritime law, threatening the welfare and safety of the civilian ship.

Responding to this intimidation, Congresswoman McKinney declared, "I am extremely angry. We demand that the Israeli government call off their attack dogs. We are unarmed civilians aboard an unarmed boat delivering medical and reconstruction aid to other human beings in Gaza. Why in God's name would Israel want to attack us?"

Huwaida Arraf, Chairperson of the Free Gaza movement and delegation co-coordinator for this voyage, said, "All we want is to reach Gaza. We want to visit our friends and deliver our cargo of medical supplies, children's toys, and reconstruction materials. Our ship was searched and received security clearance from the Port Authorities in Cyprus before we departed."

Arraf continued, "We do not seek a confrontation. We have traveled from Cypriot waters to international waters and will enter Gazan waters. We've never gone anywhere near Israel. Israel’s closure of Gaza is an act of collective punishment and a blatant violation of international law. We call upon our governments to take action to uphold their obligations under the Fourth Geneva Conventions. If they won’t or until they do, we will act. We will come to Gaza again and again until this brutal siege is broken. We invite the good people of the world to join us."

Free Gaza boats are the first international ships in 41 years to sail to the Gaza Strip. Since August 2008, the Free Gaza Movement has organized 8 sea missions, successfully arriving to Gaza on 5 separate occasions. One two earlier occasions, Israeli Occupation Forces used violence to stop the ships, physically ramming and almost sinking the DIGNITY boat in December 2008, and threatening to fire on and kill unarmed passengers in January 2008. The fate of this, the eighth mission to Gaza, is still uncertain.

Activist: Israeli navy turns back Gaza aid boat
    The Associated Press
    Tuesday, June 30, 2009; 5:47 AM
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- The Israeli navy ordered a small ferry carrying medical supplies and foreign peace activists trying to break a blockade of Gaza to turn back, a spokesman for the group said Tuesday.

The Israeli military would not confirm or deny the report.
A statement by the voyage's organizers, the Free Gaza Movement, said the vessel, the Spirit of Humanity, left the Cypriot port of Larnaca on Monday bound for Gaza with 3 tons of medical supplies.

The 20 passengers include former U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire and other activists from Britain, Ireland, Bahrain and Jamaica.

"There is a patrol boat around us and we were told that if we did not turn back they would open fire," the movement's Web site quoted Derek Graham, an Irish activist, as saying by satellite telephone.

The Free Gaza Movement has organized five boat trips to Gaza since August 2008, defying a blockade imposed by Israel when the militant group Hamas seized control of the territory from its Palestinian rivals in June 2007.

Two other voyages were stopped by Israeli warships during Israel's three-week war in the territory in December and January. Nobody on board was harmed.

    Dear Friends,

We just spoke again with our people aboard the Spirit of Humanity. The Israeli Navy is continuing to try and intimidate the ship, and is actively jamming its radar, GPS, and navigation systems in direct violation of international maritime law. This jamming is extremely dangerous and directly threatens the welfare and safety of everyone aboard our civilian ship.

Because their instrumentation is being jammed, they are using compass & paper to attempt to navigate. They are in international waters & they believe their location is approximately 110km off of the town of Hadera. Everyone is tired but determined. They are not being deterred by the Israeli aggression & are continuing toward Gaza. Please help them.

Israel boards activist ship heading to Gaza: military
The Israeli navy on Tuesday halted and boarded a ship carrying pro-Palestinian activists that was heading to the Gaza Strip, a military spokesman said.

"In the last hour an Israeli navy force intercepted, boarded and took control of the cargo boat 'Arion' ... as it was illegally attempting to enter the Gaza Strip," the spokesman said.

The military said the ship, which was sailing under a Greek flag, was the same vessel known as the "Spirit of Humanity," which was sailing to Gaza to protest the Israeli blockade on the Hamas-ruled territory.

    From the Red Cross:
Red Cross: Israel trapping 1.5m Gazans in despair
    By Haaretz Service

The Red Cross released a damning report Monday on the effects of the Israel-led blockade on the Gaza Strip, describing the 2-year-old measure as having trapped the coastal territory's 1.5 million residents "in despair."

The international humanitarian organization lamented the fact that the blockade, imposed after Hamas seized control of Gaza two years ago, was impeding reconstruction efforts after Israel's offensive in the Strip at the beginning of the year.

"Gaza neighborhoods particularly hard hit by the Israeli strikes will continue to look like the epicenter of a massive earthquake unless vast quantities of cement, steel and other building materials are allowed into the territory for reconstruction," the report said.

According to the Red Cross, Gaza's poverty is directly linked to the blockade that is "strangling" the local economy.

UPDATE: Israeli Navy Is On the Attack Oppose This Piracy!
Tuesday, 30 June 2009 01:15 Written by Free Gaza Team
We just spoke to the passengers. Everyone is OK, but the situation is still very tense. They continue to be surrounded by Israeli warships which are threatening to open fire. The Israeli Navy is actively jamming all navigation systems in violation of international maritime law, endangering the people on board.

Former U.S. Congresswoman, Cynthia McKinney, speaking from on board the SPIRIT, stated, "I am extremely angry. We demand that the Israeli government call off their attack dogs. We are unarmed civilians aboard an unarmed boat delivering medical and reconstruction aid to other human beings in Gaza. Why in God's name would Israel want to attack us and threaten our safety and welfare. I call on President Obama and the international community to intervene now to prevent this situation from escalating with potentially drastic results to the civilians on board."

Since the boat's navigation equipment is being jammed, it has turned westward in order to stay in international waters. The Captain and crew are working from the most ancient of navigation equipment...the compass to stay clear of Israeli waters.

“We will be carrying medical supplies in sealed boxes, as well as crayons, coloring books and toys for children, cleared by customs at the Larnaca International Airport and the Port of Larnaca. We will also be carrying 300 bags of cement…. As it will be confirmed that neither we, the cargo, any of the boats' contents, nor the boats themselves constitute any threat to the security of Israel or its armed forces, we do not expect any interference with our voyage by Israel's authorities.”

The Foreign Ministry has not revealed how it will deal with the boats, which are to arrive at the Gaza Coast by Sunday, depending on the winds. It initially ignored the first sailing last August in order to avoid a “media circus” but later changed its policy and ordered the Navy to send patrol boats to divert the vessels.

Israel has limited the transfer of cement, metal and building materials to Gaza because of fears that the de facto Hamas government will use them for weapons and to build bunkers and tunnels used to smuggle weapons in from Egypt.

This is a clip from an Israeli paper....they lie and lie and lie some more.

Israel rejected as "scandalous" a highly critical report released by the International Committee of the Red Cross on Monday marking six months since Operation Cast Lead, saying it was inconceivable that the document would chastise Israel for the situation in Gaza while ignoring the continued detention of IDF soldier Gilad Schalit or the "intransigent belligerence" of Hamas.

According to the report, residents of the Strip are "living in desperation" due to their "daily struggle for existence."

"Gazans still cannot rebuild their lives," the report reads. "Most people struggle to make ends meet. Seriously ill patients face great difficulty obtaining the treatment they need. Many children suffer from deep psychological problems. Civilians whose homes and belongings were destroyed during the conflict are unable to recover," the ICRC maintained.

"During the 22 days of the Israeli military operation, nowhere in Gaza was safe for civilians. Hospitals were overwhelmed with casualties, including small children, women and elderly people. Six months after Israel launched its three-week military operation in Gaza on 27
December 2008, Gazans still cannot rebuild their lives. Most people struggle to
make ends meet. Seriously ill patients face great difficulty obtaining the treatment
they need. Many children suffer from deep psychological problems. Civilians whose
homes and belongings were destroyed during the conflict are unable to recover.
During the 22 days of the Israeli military operation, nowhere in Gaza was safe for
civilians. Hospitals were overwhelmed with casualties, including small children,
women and elderly people. Medical personnel showed incredible courage and
determination, working around the clock to save lives in extremely difficult
circumstances. Meanwhile, daily rocket attacks launched from Gaza put thousands
of residents at risk in southern Israel. Medical workers in Israel provided care for the
traumatized population and treated and evacuated casualties.
Many people in Gaza lost a child, a parent, another relative or a friend. Israel's military
operation left thousands of homes partly or totally destroyed. Whole neighbourhoods
were turned into rubble. Schools, kindergartens, hospitals and fire and ambulance
    stations were damaged by shelling.
    This small coastal strip is
    cut off from the outside
    world. Even before the
    latest hostilities, drastic
    restrictions on the
    movement of people
    and goods imposed by
    the Israeli authorities,
    particularly since
    October 2007, had led
    to worsening poverty,
    rising unemployment
    and deteriorating public
    services such as health
    care, water and sanitation.
    Insufficient cooperation
    between the Palestinian
    Authority in Ramallah and
    the Hamas administration
in Gaza had also hit the
    provision of essential
    services. As a result, the
    people of Gaza were
    already experiencing a
    major crisis affecting all
    aspects of daily life when
    hostilities intensified in
    late December.
    Six months later, restrictions
    on imports are making
    it impossible for Gazans
    to rebuild their lives. The
quantities of goods now entering Gaza fall well short of what is required to meet the
population's needs. In May 2009, only 2,662 truckloads of goods entered Gaza from
Israel, a decrease of almost 80 per cent compared to the
