Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey got a jump on the July 1 deadline, acquiring centre Scott Gomez and his massive contract from the New York Rangers for forward Chris Higgins on Tuesday.
The move also saw five minor-leaguers change hands - Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik were sent to the Big Apple with Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto coming back to Montreal in return.
