Army Board recommends discharge of gay officer

A military board recommended Tuesday that Lt. Dan Choi be dismissed from the New York National Guard because he is openly gay.

Choi, who speaks Arabic and served for 15 months in Iraq as a member of the 10th Mountain Division, told a news conference after learning of the board action that he plans to continue his fight to stay in the military, The Syracuse Post-Standard reported. The four officers on the board made their decision after an all-day closed hearing at Hancock Air Base in Syracuse.

"Today was a setback for me," Choi said. "I got in trouble for saying three words. 'I am gay.'"

Lt. Gen. Thomas Miller, commander of the First Army Division, and Gen. Craig McKinley, who heads the National Guard Bureau, can accept or reject the board recommendation. Choi violated the "don't ask, don't tell" policy put in place by President Bill Clinton and Congress in 1994.

President Obama said Monday he has asked the Defense Department to develop plans for opening the military to open homosexuals. Most European countries now allow gays to serve.

I find that the military is focusing on the wrong thing, completely. This man's sexuality is not important at all; it's about what he can bring to the army as a soldier and professional.

The military should be focusing on what they're really doing in the middle-east to 'help' the people.

Did he shoot someone? Did he violate the space of another officer? No, he simply stated three little words. Get over it, there are other things in the world, military personnel's, that need more attention too. You had to do an all day closed hearing where I'm sure the decision was made instantly and they just stayed in there smoking and hahaing it up, but god its THREE WORDS. Will we ever grow out of this insane ways and move forward to a better, more welcoming future?

I just don't get what he's done that's immoral. The military is NOT Christian, or Muslim, or ANY one religion. My religion has nothing against gay people - and the United States military needs to understand that they are a secular organization.

And the hypocracy continues...If the military knew anything of history they would know that one of the greatest militaries our world has ever seen was composed of gay men. But again that's not important to the homophobes left in the military. This is another great law that is out dated and needs to be extracted.

This is just as discriminatory as if they were to say that women can't serve in the military.

This man served on the 10th mountain division, you just don't let people like that go, gay or not.

  •

Obama needs to address this law now. I could have cared less if my fellow soldiers were gay so long as they could keep cool and do the job they were assigned.

Unfortunately, the military is just following current (outdated) procedures so it is unfair to shoot the enforcers. It is Obama's responsibility to make good on his campaign promise and repeal "Don't ask, don't tell" immediately.

2009 and still discriminating? Not a very reassuring endorsement for humanity.

I don't mind that our military has gays and lesbians in it, but the main purpose of "don't ask, don't tell" was to allow gay and lesbians in the military. It's a bit conflicting in why people want to destroy something that allowed them to serve in the first place.

I'm afraid I'm conflicted on this issue.

"Don't ask, don't tell" forces someone to deny and/or hide a basic aspect of their identity.

It is troubling that a law was written that "allows" gays to serve in secret without decriminalizing homosexuality outright. The current policy is a black eye for the armed forces and should make one logically question the notion of equality in America.

the u.s. military uses the upside down, V, the greek letter lambda to signify akinship to sparta, the greatest warriors of all time, many say. the greek warriors were encouraged to have a lover in their phalanix. the lovers were paired in battle with the stronger in front of the weaker and they fought like hell to protect their love. the romans adopted this practice with great results as did the catholic church, in it's hour of need.
the knights templar, although they were celibate monks, were the shock troops of the crusades. the church ordered them to pair up and sleep togeather with only one blanket, under the long desert night. they had one horse and they were ordered to ride togeather, one behind the other into battle. strong attachments formed as they rode across europe and the holy land. one bouncing in the lap of the other for mile after hot sticky mile, across the endless, lonely desert. ...i'm just saying....
who would call; king leonidas of the 300 or alexander of macedonia, limp wristed?

a person's sexual orientation has nothing to do with if that person could help or save someone in need or guard our country....I know that if I am drowing or stuck in a fire, I am not going to stop my rescuer and ask them if they are gay......and even if a person know's another person's sexual orientation, that should never deter one human from helping another human....

i saw him on rachel maddow, which was just an amazing combination within itself.
but anyways he's an amazing guy who's done amazing service for our country and i cannot even begin to speak of the injustice done to him, homosexuals, and americans in general because of this nonsense.

the time's running, obama. your move.

    and another thing:

you know what really grosses me out?
there was an article on here a few days ago with a white supremacist skinhead character who was allowed to serve the country and everyone knew he was an active skinhead but their reaction was like, "o hai skinhead guy lolz!!!!11!1!!1"

but choi does as much as that guy-- if not more-- and gets discharged because he's gay.
that is FUCKING ridiculous and it really pisses me off.

I think we have better things to worry about than the sexual orientation of our soldiers. Like, are they armored properly?

the military's very foundation is based on the respect of command and rules. he knows the rules and the consequences for breaking them. not saying it's right, just saying.

This is so wrong, we are losing people from our armed forces that are patriots and can help defend our country. I suspect President Obama will have to change this real soon for the sake of the country.
