Yes, I know Marvel also has gay characters in Runaways and Young Avengers (young people are more susceptible to catching "teh gay") and Northstar, but none of those are top-tier characters either, and I also think he's dead. I'm just saying DC seems to be allowing homosexual characters a higher profile. Although all of DC's gay characters seems to be hot lesbians. Maybe everyone's terrible and I shouldn't have brought it up."

That's from Topless Robot, and it brings up a couple of good points- how come the gay characters are always second tier? Why do they start with hot lesbians? (I remember the first hot lesbian I knew in comics was Gen13's Rainmaker!) Will we see more homosexuals in pop culture emerge, and will they take them out of the comics and start putting them in movies too? What about transsexuals, will they be represented as well? What do you think?

Isn't Buffy the Vampire Slayer now a lesbian in the comics?
-
Sure, why not, its one many ways, to get the media's direct attention, enough to, praise it, like they do almost everything else...That is viewed in the public eye, spreaded on Tv, of course..

i am writing a comic book about a doctor that gives shock therapy to gay people. the gay lifestyle is against the law in this fictional comic book so they are plucked off the streets by the "security forces" and brought to different doctors like the protagonist of this particular yarn. the kicker is, that the shock therapy works and they are no longer gay once "rehabilitated" (but perhaps a little more docile and stupid then they used to be) the doctor's name is Jesus so i am going to call the series:
Jesus' Work
i'm looking for inkers as we speak ; )

Lesbians are easier for society to deal with, especially hot lesbians. Oh gee, Buffy is a lesbian? Oh gee, Batwoman is a lesbian? Big breasted super heroes running around kissing each other seems very easy for a homophobic society to digest.

Then why wasn't a bigger deal made about Northstar?
He was gay, but was it because he was Canadian that it passed without noticed? Both that and "none of those are top-tier characters either" are just excuses.
It also depends on how that part of their character is portrayed. Is it at the very forefront like in the case of Ace and Gary of Ambiguously Gay Duo?
In Northstar's case, it wasn't showcased, it was mentioned only when it was relevant to the that part of the story.
Maybe that is the difference in "DC seems to be allowing homosexual characters a higher profile" that the "hot lesbians" storylines are a larger part of the comics than the stories of being superheroes.

My agree with Strong guy, didn’t see that coming

I'm sure when they chose for Batwoman etc to become lesbians (omg, sexual oriINKtation is a choice!) they weren't terribly concerned that their primary market of hormone laden young men would reject the notion of a heroine with vulgarly drawn body proportions getting extra friendly with other women possessing similar curves.

Who cares about Shatterstar?
I want to see Gambit and Wolverine bent over a coffee table. -
short answer: yes.
long answer: yes, and the inclusion of any gay characters, period, in what is arguably the most dudebro-y of all dudebro-y expressive mediums is a huge step in that direction. television has already embraced homosexuals as lead characters (see: will and grace, as unfortunate a vehicle for homosexual stereotyping and gay best friend syndrome as it was). i think that the real question is whether or not it's time that the media in general embrace homosexual characters who are not self-obsessed, uber-nelly caricatures of real gay people.
the day that transsexuals and transgendered people are represented prominently, positively and respectfully in any, and i mean ANY, part of mainstream culture, you will not be able to slap the smile off of my face. it hasn't happened yet, at least not by my measure, and it might not happen in my lifetime, but i sure hope it does.

I think people have yet to fully realize that you can have a story about a gay person without the story being about their sexual orientation.
I'd certainly be nice to see gay characters take lead roles in films/shows/novels without the focus being on their preference in partner, being that they have multiple facets to their personality just like everyone else. However, I'm not holding out for any miracles.
-
I'm a fan of Marvel (specifically, X-men), but I'm a little disappointed with their treatment of gay characters. Here's an interesting story about how they were originally going to make a New Mutants supporting character gay, then kill him off just to prove a point about tolerance:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anole_(comics)#Alternate_storylines
Fortunately, they changed their minds and the character not only survived, but went on to become a fan favorite. Personally, he's one of my favorite characters, if not my favorite.

i totally agree with those saying lesbians are more acceptable. gay women are VERY acceptable by young hormone crazed males, especially when they're sexy curvaceous lesbians.
where as gay men... it's all like.... "urgh.... homo's.... poofters.... bummers... etc"On the other hand if you have long running characters with established histories and relationships, they'd have to 'turn gay' making for the majority of people an unbelievable storyline.
-
They're slowly chipping away. If Marvel went and outted Captain America or Professor X, people would freak. Instead you throw out a hot lesbian, then a younger boy, eventually when people are not making it such an issue you go for the big move.
DC can get away with more because, let's face it, Marvel has the market share right now.
-
I can see your point Torch, however DC has already gone that route with outing Batwoman. What I think would be interesting would to see a more masculine female character (not necessarily gay) which isn't really found in superheroes.

This is a touchy subject. I wouldn't want my child to be exposed to pro gay material. Call me what you want I want a straight child and I wouldn't promote any other lifestyle besides a procreative one. Still I see the benefit in allowing every view point so I'm not exactly against this stuff.

I am all for this. I think the world needs to have more representation of alternate lifestyles. There needs to be some trans gender super hero's also. After that I think we need to allow Ned, the sheep loving farmer, to have his own comic. There is also this guy on my street who swears his left shoe loves him and their relationship is true. Ok, enough with the dribble. It's a comic book. The sexuality of the characters doesn't ever need to be brought up. OK, for sake of story line and love interest we are occasionally going to have some relationship stuff. I am alright with that, gay or straight. But to make the focus of a comic book the sexual preference of the character is ludicrous. And while I understand all you gays and all you far left liberals are going to be all for this, I can't see it making a long term profit. It is a gimmick and your ideals are being used for a quick buck.
-
I think the idea of gay, lesbian, and homosexuality is wrong and should not be plastered in the media. If a pereson is gay and they choose to be gay, then fine that's their choice but I don't think that type of lifestyle should be out in public and forced on others to see.

Drego, yes, very stupid since your comment goes against evolution. One generation of gays ends the species. We all come from a heterosexual action.
And to help you out I am not in favor of coital displays of affection between heterosexual couples. Some things are private and raging hormones should not be on display publicly.
Gay pride parades, half the people naked. Way to gain respect for your sexual preference. I had a gay room mate. He wasn't flaming nor was he flamboyant. He had his boyfriends over and we never had a problem. Oh wait, we did, the time when one of his boyfriends use my girlfriends tupperware bowl as an ash tray. Oh, and the time one of his boyfriends turned out to be 16 and the police came knocking on my door. His lifestyle wasn't the problem, his life choices were.
Acedia, you want to call comic books an accurate portrayal of the world? You sure you want to go there?
Seriously, I don't care if your partner is a sheep. Really! I REALLY don't care who is satisfying your carnal urges. But honestly, until a larger portion of gays start acting like regular people, their sexuality is always going to be held against them. Just like, here comes the hate mail, just like goths and punks and everybody who strays really far from the norm have to deal with society. I know for some it is the same sex thing that bothers them, but for most of the people I know it is really the queer flaming attitude. Grow up, being gay doesn't mean you have to act like a clown. Show some respect, get some respect. Act like a clown, get treated like a clown.

I would love to have a gay son . I have tried taking him to gay pride parades and gay parties , but there is no sign of him being anything but straight . He has been giving little girls flowers since he was 6 . His dad didn't even do that , so , I do not know where he got it . --- If you fear "gay" , then it is most possible that you fear or are trying to repress , part of yourself . This can lead to criminal violence . That is why the golden rule transcends all religions and belief systems . It is the healthiest way .
