La Roux's gaffe on why women get beaten up

Image...
Elly Jackson, better known as the red-topped front woman of electro-pop group La Roux, has opened her mouth and inserted her foot. In an interview with the Quietus, she said:

"There's far more ways to be sexy than to dress in a miniskirt and a tank top … I think you attract a certain kind of man by dressing like that. Women wonder why they get beaten up, or have relationships with arsehole men. Because you attracted one, you twat."

This comes as quite a surprise considering she gets so much flack for her appearance. Is she really saying that women are responsible for sexual abuse? She wasn't challenged on her remarks during the interview, but some say what she said is really controversial and an attack on feminism. Would you agree?

I can see what she's saying, she just worded it wrong. Probably got misquoted TBH.

Revealing outfits do attract a certain type of neanderthal man, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're all wife-beaters.

i hope this is misquoted.... either that or she is a very misguided woman.

as for an attack on feminism. a lot of modern day feminist writing would accept women in short skirts and see that the way a women dresses is her choice and she shouldn't be regarded as being any less worthwhile whether she wears boyish clothes, nerdy clothes, uncool clothes, or revealing clothes.

I think that sometimes girls are asking to get harassed (maybe not beaten up) by dressing a certain way.

it seems that women dress provocatively because they want to know that men are looking at what they have and are showing off, they don't necessisarily want anyone to touch...

which seems kinda lame...i know that i dont really go out of my way to dress that way b/c i am 100% disinterested in the type of guys who act on such clothing...

i dont want to be those girls and i certainly don't want the attention of those kinds of guys...

but i don't think anyone deserves to be beaten. I think that girls should keep their skanky clothes away...if you can't feel or be sexy to yourself or the opposite sex without practically being naked or showing your naughty bits, then you're lame and you need to re-evaluate yourself and your wardrobe...

A woman's style of dress does not mean she's looking to be abused. Perhaps we think these women get abused more often because the scantily clad assertive women are more likely to speak out about abuse than the diminutive housewives. I have no proof for this, but it does make some sense.

I don't see how showing your "naughtly bits" makes you lame Miss Amanda. There's no need to degrade other women. Certain cultures would consider your dress skanky, but you have the right to disagree and do what makes you happy.

I agree with the first comment that was made. I think what she said was taken the wrong way...but I do agree that certain clothes do attract douchbags who are not looking to have any respect for you... but as far as a womer beater is concerened I think a man w/problems will beat on any women who allows him to...not just a sluty dressed one
