That said, we are only one year into the current crisis, whereas after 1929 the world economy continued to shrink for three successive years. What matters now is that policy makers arrest the decline. We therefore turn to the policy response.

I would like to point out that Herbert Hoover (R) did not leave office until 1933, he is largely blamed for the continuation of the Great Depression for those three years (ever heard of a Hooverville?) When the economy began to turn around was when Franklin Roosevelt (D) took over and began to implement work programs (the first round of which failed do to political opposition) and government stimulus's. Once the 'New Deal' (Roosevelts second work program effort) was under way the economy started growing slowly, but steadily until our entry into WWII at which time jobs were not in shortage and the economy took off.
Does this story sound familiar to anyone? Or did everyone sleep through history?
So in short... Obama is already doing what was proved to work in the 30's... how do you like that Mr. bbar Jim Jones supporter? I can hear the grumbling now... and I reveal in it thank you.... HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

FDR's policies extended the depression for some 7 years. He expanded the Reconstruction Finance Agency that began under Hoover, the design of which was to do exactly what the gov. is doing today with the banks and other corporations. He also packed the courts with liberal judges who finally, after the Constitutional judges began to throw out his socialist programs, put their stamp of approval on his actions. This IS exactly what Obama is doing and it will not be good for this country.
Obama is doing what FDR did, using the economy to put in place socialism and fascist policies to the ultimate detriment of the country. What Obama is doing is not Constitutional but no one seems to care. It is about sttism, expan ding the power and control of the central governmetn at the expense of the country and individual freedom. Wake up and see what is happening. Obama is NOT our solution. He is the enemy and is dangerous as are the morons who support him.

Arguing aside, even if the Rosevelt's policies worked back then, what makes us think that this is the best/only way to fix the problem?
This whole thing stemmed from personal debt becoming bank debt. Does government debt solve the problem or make it worse?

If this was a Republican president the conservatives would be calling it genius and the progressives would be howling about it in a negative fashion...All I can add is that we will all be better off if we can help make it work..if it fails the only thing that the opponents will have is bragging rights...Why in name of God you guys want a total financial collapse is beyond me, unless you are all already living in poverty with nothing to lose....I believe the term is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
When I was a kid I remember the story about a hen who could not get anyone to help gather grain, prepare the wheat, , and bake the bread...but all were eager to eat it after the work was done...I wish there was a way to exclude those of you who are so eager to see our president fail and are actually working to the end that would facilitate failure...
when the economy recovers..which it will, it always does. As I see it we liberals are trying to create a bright future...you conservatives keep trying to dwell in the past...to me that's like hanging around a cemetery and trying to raise the dead.
It's not 1955 and never will be again, enormous Cadillacs and lincolns no longer rule the road and never will again, all of those icons of americas greatness in yesteryear have been surpassed and the only way we recapture our greatness again is to join the 21st century and lead again, not keep trying to recreate a society and a world that no longer exists.
