WTF are "Sewer Worms"?!? - The Tubifex Tubifex

If you didn't catch the horrifying posts by Bigdogmike and Thebigchuckbows about the "Unknown Life Form" in NC, you should! (http://current.com/items/90317892_unknown-lifeform-in-north-carolina-sewer.htm) It's pretty gross.

So what is this shit demon? Apparently a colony of Tubifex, also called the "Sludge Worm" or "Sewer Worm". Conspiracy theories continue to fly around the internet (what's yours?) but scientists and sewer inspectors suspect our wormy friend.

Here's a few sources:

"These worms ingest sediments and gain nutrition by selectively digesting bacteria and absorbing molecules through the body wall. The worms can survive with little oxygen through the use of their hemoglobin rich tail-ends, which they wave in order to absorb what little oxygen they can. They can also survive in areas so heavily polluted with organic matter that almost no other species can endure. By forming a protective cyst and lowering its metabolic rate, T. tubifex can survive drought and food shortage. Encystment may also function in dispersal of the worm."

It doesnt get good until a minute in, and then it looks like an alien lifeform. There is very little that makes me feel squeemish, but this thing fits the bill big-time. I just scrolled back up to look at it and it makes me say "Ewww!" and want to run away.

whats funny is that most people feed their tropical fish tubiflex worms. They are usually redder, and smaller, but they usually don;t come from the sewer either.
Tubbies improve fresh water fish color and moods.,

EEEW! That makes the sewer look like an intestine. I'm going to vomit up my breakfast now.

Like abbym said, these tubes look organic to me. Before reading the linked articles, I thought these worms were living inside someone's large intestines or something similar.

So gross. Like in Onimusha 2 where Nobunaga's lair was made of intestines and crap. I saw this on AOTS actually - that's where you got the idea to post this.

Is it just me or does it appear to react quite "violently" to light shining on it?
    It appears to "contract".

Sadly the wiki doesn't mention anything.

Also, "IT'S THE BEATING OF THE HIDEOUS HEART!!"
