WASHINGTON, D.C. — With millions of people in the United States eagerly awaiting those July 4 fireworks displays here’s a prospect for those light shows of the future likely to ignite a smile on Mother Nature’s face: A new generation of “green” fireworks is quietly making its way toward the sky.

That’s “green” as in environmentally friendly.

Researchers, however, have developed new pyrotechnic formulas that replace perchlorate with nitrogen-rich materials or nitrocellulose that burn cleaner and produce less smoke, according to an article in ACS’s weekly newsmagazine, Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN).

    • btw im a granola environmental science major, but i see that as what it is, a publicity stunt with no real world effects, merely a showing of faux intent

    • The way we should all see it any step no matter how minuscule to better the environment is a step that needs to be taken and it will take us that much closer to realizing what we all know needs to happen in order for the human race to survive much longer. We are suppose to be the all knowing species the top of the food chain the smartest on the planet. When are we going to start acting like it.

Oh man you must be a REAL drag at parties. What a waste of life.
I know, why don't you lessen your impact on our poor little helpless 5 billion year old planet that YOU EVOLVED from, by putting yourself in drip-fed coma?
My God this is a wonderful life and a wonderful planet and all you can do is see it all as one big mistake? Your attitude is the mistake!
Be grateful for what you have and respect nature. Don’t fear for it with the mentality of a cave man.
      Show some civilized dignity.

you must love that line "you must be a drag at parties" look nothing you said proves any point i am simply using my right to voice my opinion the only thing you do is take shots at people so please unless you have something more to say than hey we should be happy we are alive than stop speaking. Yeah we should be happy we live but we shouldnt be accepting of all the crap we do to our home our planet that we evolved from as you so put it. We should be doing all we can to stop the destruction of our true environment not the one we created but the one that was here for us. I am happy to be alive but i wont be if i live long enough to see the beginnings of the end of human life. I have said it before and i will say it again the world will not end no, we will be the ones to end life will go on with out us. The planet is its own protector.

    • At this point in history, when we are living longer than at any time in history as a species, we can now celebrate the accomplishements of Rachel Carson and environmentalism. We have defeated the smoggy 70's when a river caught fire in Ohio, we have environmental awareness, laws, protections and standards that have made our world cleaner, safer and more enjoyable.
Life is good and there is no other point in history I'd rather be living.
I'm a real enviro. I see clean, cool blue skies and I face the futre with bravery, not fear.

You must be a real drag at a party Pal!
We are living longer than at any time in human history as a species and that isn't good enough for you. That is sad and so are you.
Just what would you like the climate to do to make you happy, be like the inside of an indoor shopping mall? Do you want the sky to be bluer than it is? Do you want our clean air to be cleaner than it is now? Do not like having energy at your finger tips making life easy, enjoyable and rewarding? Do you not like living in a free society with access to opportunities for success?
EnvironMEFNTAL ism has produced an entire generation of spoiled, obedient bobble-headed, politically correct climate pu$$ies who willingly accept the fact that they are doomed to die and dead or dieing planet earth from SUV gas and plant food. And this two generations after Rachel Carson’s revolution.
      God help us.

its only common sense that we as a special should live longer. We have understood what it takes to keep us alive longer. What the person you so needlessly bashed like a over exuberant protester is that we all know the world is going to hell in a hand basket we all know why we see it everyday we hear it from all angles but still no one is doing anything about it. No its not better that the i get to live longer because if in my long life i end up seeing my home decimated by my fellow humans only to die out of mass starvation or mass war i would see that as a crap life. The thing is the world will never end there will always be life here life is very resilient but we as people are not going to survive long. We must do something about our environmental problem. There are so many things we already have at our disposal to be the band-aid until we find a more permanent solution to problems like emissions and waste.

    • .Dah! I knew all that. It was meant as a joke to expose the truth about this irresponsible era of environMENTAL ism.
It's a joke to call CO2 nature's death warrant on one hand and then show utter insincerity for the planet by calling sources of CO2 "green" and echo friendly. A burning lob is a burning log. Fireworks are fireworks. BBQ's and grills are just that; other sources of this poison as stated by the US EPA.
Just remember, something may be natural, but so is diarrhea and there is nothing more organic than bull$hit.
History will view global warming and the WMD scam in the same chapter as an era preceding the next era of putting the emphasis on preserving, instead of saving and rescuing our planet with fear from a mistake in science and media now culture itself.
What price will we pay before we stop this insane CO2 theory from leading us further down the wrong road and needlessly scaring our children and their children?

In six words...Percholate is bad for the environment. In many more words...http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/es0700698?cookieSet=1

"Recent histological assessments show that fish from perchlorate-contaminated sites have increased
thyroid follicular hyperplasia, hypertrophy, and colloid
depletion at perchlorate concentrations as low as 100 íg/L and exposure times of 30 d (4, 5).
The potential impact of perchlorate on human and
ecosystem health is directly tied to its mobility and attenuation in the environment."
