DVD and Blu-Ray Sales Plunge

Image...
As if more proof was needed that a new generation are tired of buyin physical media objects, it has been announced that DVD sales have fallen and Blu-Ray is doing even worse.

"The British Video Association (BVA) this week said DVD sales in the UK during the first six months of 2009 were down 9.5 per cent by volume - and considerably more than that by value - compared to the totals published this time last year.

By contrast, year-on-year UK BD sales were up 231 per cent. Which sounds good, until you see that it still only amounts to unit sales of a little more than 3.1m during the first six months of 2009 - up from 1.3m in the first six months of 2008.

There were 99.6m DVDs sold in the same period."

Expect to see various movie studios blaming torrents anytime soon.....

Here are few things that irritate me about the whole mainstream media company.
1- Dvd/cd price is a set price. No matter how much a movie/album sucks, they are all around the same price
2- Dvd/cd are way overpriced compared to the actual cost of dublication/production of the media.
3- Media industry is like a big welfare system that we are forced to subsdize it through dvd and TV programs.

Don't we have enugh systems that working class need to SUBSIDIZE in order to sustain the world economy? Here are just few:
    Healthcare?
    Insurance?
    College education?
    Comcast?
    And also DVDs copyright owners??

    ...I need prozac now.

I've been saying for ages that Blu-Ray is going to be a redundant technology now that we all download.

So I hope that it fails so that I'm proven right...

You don't need a metallic disc to watch movies. The media companies won't lose anymore money than they already are by offering pay-by-download movies and TV shows online. I think they would actually make a larger profit. the iTunes video store isn't as successful as it could be because Steve Jobs is paranoid and every single media file has to be overly protected.

Sure, people will always illegally share files. But I think there are a portion of those who specifically seek out good quality files. I would rather pay 4 or 5 bucks for an HD-quality file straight from a studio website than search around Pirate Bay trying to find some burned DVD copy. I already do the same thing with music; I buy wav files directly from Beatport instead of DL the mp3s.

There is a prototype video game system using that same concept; where you pay to DL games from the network a la carte. I think it's brilliant. Plus you could have all sorts of easter eggs to entice users to DL files from your source - coupons, contests, etc.
