Would you like to see a building twisting itself into different shapes night and day on the New York skyline? Would you like to live in an apartment with a view that rotates 360 degrees? It may be a little hard at the moment to arrange financing for such tower — or any other new skyscraper in Manhattan — but the architect David Fisher is looking for a place to build it here someday.
He’s already designed such an edifice in Dubai called the Dynamic Tower, billed as the “world’s first building in motion.” Dr. Fisher, an architect based in Florence, he told me that he hopes groundbreaking for the Dubai tower will occur “within a matter of weeks,” and said that the problems in the credit market haven’t affected the project.
The tower is supposed to generate enough electricity to supply the power needs for itself as well as buildings nearby. The electricity will come from horizontal wind turbines tucked away between each of its 80 floors, and from solar photovoltaic cells on the roof each story. As the individual floors move, about 20 percent of each roof is expected to be exposed to the sun at any time of the day.
Dr. Fisher, who’s working on another of these towers for Moscow, was in town this week to discuss plans for New York. Where might it go? “We are currently looking at a few sites,” he told me. “It should be a place from where the view is attractive and also where people can stand and watch the building changing its shape.”
Any suggestions for him? Any predictions on how well those turbines and photovoltaic cells will work? And would you pay a premium to live in a room with a moving view?

how many self-powered buildings of our future(Arab's today) do you think the "WAR ON TERROR" can build now that this has been done by "progressive peoples" for the rest of US to admire!!!
now I know what "The Dark Ages" is..............

so...blinking...COOL
-
Don't know if I would want to live in a giant Jenga game, like the last pic. But it would be fun to watch, from a distance.
-
how would the elevators/ stairs work?
-
My guess would be, the tower would be spinning around the elevator, so it would be it the very middle.
Pretty easy huh? lol

As i though when i first saw it, this is really cool.. Naturally it only works best when each floor is a single unit. If you start treating them like a single condo with more than one tenant per floor, only one is going to have control... not very practical.
Still, for luxury condominiums or office space... very cool.

this building or 78 unite condo if you have not seen the clips above produces (via 77 wind turbines) a minimum of 40 MW far more energy than it needs for green living
reduces construction time from 30 to 18 months
work force @ site from 2000 to 90
all this amounts to elitist living with respect for a future, this is not luxury it is a necessity in doing our part in not tipping the scale off time that is stacked up against our survival from the get go!
PS
the fact that this building of the future is arrives 1st on the Arabian Peninsula speaks volumes !!!!!!-

The Rotating Skyscraper of Moscow will become the new icon of the Russian capital. The developer is the international Moscow based, MIRAX GROUP headed by Mr. Sergei Polonsky. At 70 stories and 400 meters high (1312 feet), the total area of the tower will be almost 110,000 square meters (1,184,000 square feet) with office and retail space as well as apartments and penthouses. The volume of investments into the tower construction is going to exceed $400 million.
According to the Chairman of the MIRAX GROUP, Mr. Sergey Polonsky, “The brightest feature of the building will be the rotation of most floors around the central core, irrespective of the movement of other floors. Thus, floors will not be identical, allowing the building to change its form constantly.
"After initial estimates, the method of pre-fabrication will allow us to reduce the time of construction at a minimum of 30 %, and will reduce the site pollution during construction," adds the Russian project manager
The Rotating Tower of Moscow will be one of the most exclusive world residential buildings and become the new icon of the Russian Federation.-

The Dynamic Tower, the world's first building in motion, will become a symbol of Dubai, the City of the Future.
With 80 floors, the building will be 420 meters (1,380 feet) tall. Apartments range in size from 124 square meters (1,330 square feet), to Villas of 1,200 square meters (12,900 square feet) complete with a parking space inside the apartment. Located in a prime location in Dubai, floors 1 through 20 will consist of prime office space, floors 21 to 35 will be operated as a Dynamic-branded luxury hotel, and floors 36 through 70 will be residential apartments, and the top tier of 10 floors will be luxury villas. Because of its unique concept, it is destined to become the most prestigious building in the city.
The developer is Rotating Tower Dubai Development Limited of Dynamic Group. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, is considered by many to be a true visionary of the future. Dr. Fisher's dreams for the Dynamic Tower in Dubai were inspired by His Highness who said, “Do not wait for the future to come to you…face the future.”

The Dynamic Tower, the world's first building in motion, takes the concept of Green buildings to the next level, generating electricity for itself with a possible surplus for other nearby buildings, making it the first skyscraper designed to be entirely powered by wind and sun.
With wind turbines fitted horizontally between each rotating floor, an 80-story building will have up to 79 wind turbine systems, making it a true Green power plant. While traditional vertical wind turbines have environmental and social effects, including the need for roads to build and maintain them plus their noise and obstruction of views, the Dynamic Tower's wind turbines are practically invisible and extremely quiet due to their special shape and the carbon fiber material of which they are composed.
-
Photovoltaic ink is to be placed on each roof of each rotating floor to produce solar energy. With approximately 20% of each roof exposed to the sun and light, a building with 80 roofs equals the roofing space of 10 similar size buildings.
In addition, natural and recyclable materials including stone, marble, glass and wood are intended for the interior finishing. Further improving the energy efficiency of the Dynamic Tower, insulated glass and structural insulating panels are employed. During construction, energy use is drastically reduced due the pre-fabrication of the buildings in a factory, versus traditional construction methods, which results in a cleaner construction site with limited noise, dust, fumes and waste. -
That is so inspiring !

This is very futuristic indeed.
