U.S. shifts strategy on employers of illegal immigrants
But in contrast to the high-profile raids that marked the enforcement approach of the Bush administration, no federal agents with criminal warrants stormed the company’s factories and rounded up employees. Instead, the federal immigration agency sent American Apparel a written notice that it faced civil fines and would have to fire any workers confirmed to be unauthorized.
The treatment of American Apparel, which has more than 5,600 factory employees in Los Angeles alone, is the most prominent demonstration of a new strategy by the Obama administration to curb the employment of illegal immigrants by focusing on employers who hire them — and doing so in a less confrontational manner than in years past.
Unlike the approach of the Bush administration, which brought criminal charges in its final two years against many illegal immigrant workers, the new effort makes broader use of fines and other civil sanctions, federal officials said Thursday.
Federal agents will concentrate on businesses employing large numbers of workers suspected of being illegal immigrants, the officials said, and will reserve tough criminal charges mostly for employers who serially hire illegal immigrants and engage in wage and labor violations.

Living in South Florida, this new attitude will definitely affect the work force down here!

humane treatment of immigrants? no way...

targetting the employers of illegal immigrants...what a novel concept...
-
I hope this promise to target "serial," employers is true. And I believe American Apparrel, for all of it's flaws, does a really good job of giving workers rights and keeping the production of clothes stateside. I am glad they are not attacking them outright. We should solve that company's problems and keep it a model business. The fashion that goes overseas to produce should be ashamed of themselves.

i feel a little bad that i am a citizen of an abundant country especially since a lot of that abundance is due to taking advantage of other countries. with that said, i am all for the crackdown on companies hiring people that send the bulk of their money back to their country of origin.
so i propose a new plan: you can work here but you must spend the money here. and every time you say the word "buey" a dollar of your money goes into the "gringo fund", a non-profit initiative that will fund english speaking courses for those that want to learn. the excess money will go towards the deficit, which by the end of two years should be diminished completely judging by mexican speaking habits.

Man,one of the few clothing companys not using sweatshops in low econimic country's,i believe american apparel was giving illegal immagrants an oppurtunity to work. They have every right to be here.

I wanted to work for American Apparel but the pay isn't worth it. So, i rather complain about it. Is every one down with me?
There's no easy answer to this problem.
-
Well if you put the employer on the hot seat or in prison so to speak he will not be doing much hiring from his cell, sounds like a good solution, give jobs to people who earn them by applying for legal status like our parents did.
-
That makes much more sense. You can't fault a person for trying to get a job to feed his family. But you can fault a company for hiring the wrong people and exploiting a cheaper workforce.
-
Good job, Obama! That's what has to be done! The employers are the ones to be punished for hiring illegal immigrants. Then, when they can't find people to work, they'll have to pressure the government to issue work permits for immigrants.
I can't wait to see farmers in California being fined and prosecuted for hiring illegal immigrants...
Americans, soon you'll not have Mexicans slaves anymore... expect food prices to go way up, among other things!

Want a job? Are you a hard worker? Welcome.
Hopefully my fellow Americans will get over their 'we were here first' BS and start treating people like human beings.

Yo trabajo en una compania donde los ilegales son buen pagados y tienen buenos beneficios. I would just like to say Viva America. "NAH MEAN".

I'm laughing at some of these responses. It is illegal to hire a non documented worker. Period. These people will still get deported. They will loose there job and their family will be left behind somewhere . Same thing as always. I see no difference between now and before other than giving the company notice that it is being watched. There is no Obama magic here. So now the company can flush the undocumented worker on the streets and create another problem. If he didn't hire them in the first place this would not be an issue. Picking crops on a seasonal basis is a different matter. A seasonal pass, such as Canada uses could be used. Enforcement is what is needed. As far as the "lazy" home grown's are concerned they will get their own in time. American ingenuity will figure out how to eliminate the job in it's entirety. It's cheaper to run a machine than hire hands to do the work. Elli's cotton gin proved this.

please challenge these California liberals. these motherfuckers are so dense that they would fight to give these "recently removed illegals' unemployment checks

About time. How about going after employers that outsource our jobs as well.
-
It's about friggin time what the hell took them so long, oh I guess no jobs so it's easier to enforce and most out of work Americans will settle for a low paying job again advantage employers.

why does the goverment care that people are working illegally for a company that hires illegals? Our nation was built on immigration. The people working for american apparel or whoever else are making more money than they would in their own country. and what does it matter if they send money back to there familys?
do people not understand if a illegal immigrant is using a fake social security num the money they pay in will only be profit for our country not including state taxes. guess if they were making pizza, greek salad, matza balls, fake shoes or any other product it would be o.k.-

these displaced workers are going to have to do something, they aren't just going to die. some will get their hands dirty in the fields, some in crime. lately there has been the butchering of cattle in the fields here in calif.. the black bear are killed for their gallbladders(chinese viagra). pot is being grown in the national forests under armed mexican guards. abondoned meth. labs with the workers poisoned. here in santa barbara we have a place called the wall where mexicans line the road waiting to get picked up for day labor, some wave down cars with smack, crack or rock in hand, the blatently open trade is jaw droping.
displacing these determined people isn't going to make them go away, they are not about to return to mexico, they will find someway to stay alive, and with the coming depression i don't want to end up in a ditch missing a kidney. -
When the jobs dry up because the illegal employers are being fined they will go home.

It is a step towards a better understanding of and a solution to illegal immigration issues in this Country.
However, like many of you pointed out, even if the employers - who benefit from illegals' labor, just like you and I do - are those who should be held responsible for their hires, what will happen to the undocumented worker once he/she is fired?
While there are many answers to that question - one of them being deportation - it is time for this government to realize it is NECESSARY to provide a portion of these 12 million illegally employed immigrants some sort of ID/documentation. That's how it works when you migrate and get a job in the new country. The company should help you and sponsor you for the paperwork to work and stay BECAUSE THEY NEED YOU.
I understand everyone (many do) wants to come here and that immigration needs to be regulated, but if the USA is the richest country in the world it is because of great entrepreneurship AND because it took a lot from the world's human and natural resources outside its borders. It is already making so much money off the undocumented working population, that an ID would only help you keep track of who's here for what reason.

Just to add to the above:
Trust me, none of these jobs we're talking about are occupations that the majority of the current legal residents of this Nation would want to do for more than a few months of their lives. Employers need reliable all year-round hardworking employees.
