The South Yorkshire Police have released a recording of a 999 call in which a hysterical woman reports her pet hamster has escaped.
The woman dialed 999, telling the operator: 'It's my hamster. It's got out of its cage. It's gone into the bathroom and it's gone down into the floorboards.'
'Me hamster, me baby hamster. I can hear it scratching, it's still alive,' she continued. 'Is there any chance anyone could come and help me get it out?'
The police hope this example will highlight the misuse of 999. They said 8 out of 10 emergency calls they receive do not actually require urgent attention.
