<snip of story>
"This clearly happened so quickly that Palin hasn't even had a chance to come up with a coherent cover story for her resignation. ... Remember that based on the public record, Palin is a wildly unethical public official, guilty at a minimum of numerous instances of abusing her authority as governor. And a lot of very damaging information has come out about her in the last few days --- though mainly embarrassing information about her character rather than new evidence of bad acts. I would not be surprised if this latest round of revelations shook something else loose that we haven't heard about yet."

Obviously, this is a "non-story" unless and until some sort of allegation or investigation is actually revealed. I WAS, however truly surprised by her announcement (much to my chagrin because I think I told someone just a week ago that NOTHING Palin could do would surprise me anymore because she is such a loose cannon).
She just seemed to RELISH her position as Governor. But her conduct HAS been incredibly erratic for someone who was just recently plucked from political obscurity and finished the race as popular or perhaps even MORE popular with the Republican base (or is that "base Republicans?") than McCain. She had money pouring in, fan clubs being formed, a list of volunteers for her next Presidential campaign as long as your arm, invitations to speak from all over the country (and around the world, for that matter).
Yet her efforts to follow up on ANY of those advantages has been anemic at best (and non-existent most of the time). So I did wonder briefly this afternoon whether there was some kind of unifying explanation for all of this -- though I had considered something more in the way of serious illness. But I suppose she probably would have at least lightly touched on such an illness in her announcement had that been the case...

Alaska's governor Sarah Palin resigns, dooming her presidential pipe dream
Excerpt:
"She proved she couldn't play in the big leagues last fall and now she's proven it again," one of the party's most prominent kingmakers said. "If you can't even handle a governorship, there's no way you can handle the White House.
"She couldn't win - but now she can't even run," added the official, who once was among her most fervent boosters.
"She has an incredibly thin résumé, a serious lack of gravitas, no coherent philosophy and the people around her are amateurs," another top Republican pol argued. "She's finished."
...
It seems that she has been losing support from many Republicans.

wow... She is freaking out.

She'd better hurry and sign a modelling contract or get a TV talking head gig before she loses her looks too. It's not long to follow.

It's hilarious. Conservatives and even supposedly bright, conservative pundits see this as her "opening salvo" into a run for the 2012 presidency. It is obviously either a case of not standing the heat, or getting out of the limelight in the face of impending legal investigations. Your comedic potential will be greatly missed Sarah Barracuda.

Well I believe she just could not handle who she was becoming. The Karma thing was getting to her you know, Obama's been palling around with terrorist crap that enraged so many right wingers so much they couldn't see straight. There does appear to be more to the story and I feel grateful that the country dodged a bullet by not electing McCain/Palin, can you imagine her quitting when confronted by world affairs and world opinions.

If conservatives don't get out of town before the shit hits the fan it's harder to blame it in the left.

"Another one bites the dust hey hey hey"
-
Naw, not biting the dust - just loosening the reigns. Every time she leaves the state someone files an ethic complaint - so she said enough is enough and she's going to advance her agenda OUTSIDE office. I say YAY for her! I can hardly wait to see her unleashed as she should have been during the campaign.

It seems her house was built with the same materials as the Wasilla hockey rink. I said it before, and again a commercial fisherman does not build a house with a huge window wall that can withstand Alaska's severe winter weather. Those windows alone cost a fortune.

Of course if those damned people and their baseless ethics complaints would just go away. We know she is righteous! She is the anointed one!
-
It think much like Pawlenty she can see the economic hand writing onthe wall and wants to get out of the line of fire before her economic policies really explode on whoever is in charge then.
As for embizzelment"sources" on a blog could very well mean "I heard my dog talking again"

Max Blumenthal at The Daily Beast offers additional details:
One logical place to start looking is the affair that has Alaska political circles buzzing: an alleged scandal centered around a building contractor, Spenard Building Supplies, with close ties to Palin and her husband, Todd.
Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state. …
Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few “buddies,” according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.
Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an additional $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.

I would not be surprised if this is true. On a different note, can we as current users stop bashing this woman and other people we disagree with. I know this is the internet and that is a popular thing to do and it is the internet and therefore unimportant and it does not really matter, but lets be above the b.s. Lets keep Current.com classy people. Now I can't stand this woman, buts lets not degenerate to name-calling.
