A conceptual design of how the "synthetic tree" might look should they ever reach the stage of production.
A conceptual design of how the "synthetic tree" might look should they ever reach the stage of production.
As the wind blows though plastic "leaves," the carbon is trapped in a chamber, compressed and stored as liquid carbon dioxide.
The technology is similar to that used to capture carbon from flue stacks at coal-fired power plants, but the difference is that the "synthetic tree" can catch carbon anytime, anywhere.

This seems like something you could buy at the Sharper Image. It is awesome though, I hope it doesn't end up replacing the real thing though.

I have a better idea Plant more trees and stop tearing up the ones that are already there. I think that is far more cost effective and better for the world. Its made to protect its self i think it will be alright with the natural method. It would be nice on a smaller scale for a home or large buildings where the air isnt so nice. I just dont think it should be on a mass global scale.

how much energy does it take to store this carbon? and what happens if the metal tree gets destroyed, would all of that carbon just get released as soon as it evaporates?

Humans Were Created in Gods Image. God Was a Creator. We Will Not be Happy Until We Can Explain and Reproduce Every Process. We Have Spent Our Whole Civilization Chasing Him. (replace God With; Budda, Krisna, the Architect,...whatever your flavor may be. :)

Honestly,we have proof that we can power this earth or eternity with the new discvoveries of natural energy, such as wave energy, wind energy, etc. Why wont we just use our resources. The world is stupid, mostly America.

QUESTION: Anybody else think it's funny that they're using plastic to save the planet?

I dont think this could ever replace the real thing but its a good start on getting co2 out of the atmosphere. We need tech like this!

I like real trees better. While this is a good idea, if ever put into production this will just further some idiots idea that it's okay to cut down the rain forest. Their reasoning would be "hey we have synthetic trees, we can cut down as many trees as we want."
-
Cool another green invention that could do something, but wont. Will someone fking mass produce one of these devices already? All these concept models are just acting like pacifiers. Wheres the green stimulus that's supposed to jump start this stuff?

So no more saving the Trees
I guess we could Save The Whales now. -
We are saved. Now we can pollute all we want. Drill Baby Drill!

What a GREAT idea!!!! Let's cut down all the trees, and strip mine the earth for coal and iron and build metal trees to capture CO2 from the atmosphere due to all the trees we cut down and the coal we are burning to run the robot trees. Meanwhile, we can all work two or three extra shifts per week to pay for the metal trees----which means we won't have all that extra time on our hands that we used to spend out in the woods enjoying the trees.
What genius thought up this scheme?
Here's an even better part of the plan. Let's take the trees we cut down and put 'em in a tree museum, and we'll charge all the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em.
Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone.
