Al Franken ran on a public health care platform. I can very well see that suddenly becoming more of an option now that he is in office.
IMHO It will likely save America a lot of money in the long run and make us more competitive but the conversion is going to cost. I hope we can afford it.
IIRC private insurance companies are only about 70% efficient. Of the money that goes in only 70% comes out again. i suspect it won't be hard for the government to do better,

This is awesome news. US Senators(when not on the campaign trail) rarely guarantee a thing. Good to know their will be a public option.

This is a great lesson in politics, that your participation doesn't stop when you cast your ballot. This guarantee is the result of vast numbers of citizens calling their senators, donating to advocacy groups, and BEING A PART OF THE PROCESS. It is vital we do the same for upcoming environmental legislation. If we don't, the corporate lobbyists win.

Remember it's not over till it's over, both sides hoped and prayed that they could keep Al Franken on the ropes for the rest of the year. Now with the 60th vote watch and see what politics will be played. If it looks like a win for us expect some republicans jumping to our side. This is going to a fight all summer long do not take your eyes off the prize!

A guarantee of an "option" in a bill from only one house is one thing. The wake up call heard by indecisive House reps from the the taxpayer will be deafening. No socialized medicine scheme has legs. You moochers need to find another gig.

The left wing is mobilized and people WITH insurance are ready for a public option. The insurance industry is screwing people so badly, the insurance lobby's commercials are not going to stop this train.

The insurance industry has been completely oligopolized by the government. Competition?!? HA Try competing against one of these protected industries....impossible....consumer choice be damned anytime the Feds and their monopoly comes rolling into town price distorting and shortage creating....the last 70 years our healthcare has been overrun by a corporatist state that abuses government. The people in charge today are not your friends and will not look out after you and your family. They are bailing out corporate sectors everyday and inflating the crap out of the little guy's dollar! They are saving their friends on Wall Street and giving your grandchildren the bill. Government and corporations are not polar opposites, they are partners working together to stay alive at the consumers hidden expense. Do you even know how much tax goes into your purchase of a soda from the work you did to get your paycheck to the actually purchase the sales tax? Government monopoly slavery is not the answer either, especially when big business is in bed with them. We need to force the rich to fight for our dollars, not give them protectionism and help them weed out competition enlarging their corporate empire. Democratic politicians today prop up corporations just as much as the big government republicans, it is sickening! I don't want to argue, just state these simple yet unheeded comments. Peace

the insurance industry is already controlled by government.
insurance mandates, regulations, etc.
So government pays for 50% of all healthcare, and they control the other 50% through economic fascism via government dictates.
If you don't like our current government run system, then you should logically be for a free market.
Free market works for contact lenses, cosmetic surgery, and laser eye surgery because the government-controlled insurance providers don't cover those. So its a free market, and that's why costs go down every year and quality goes up.
Don't be a brain-dead statist, hoping for more tyrannical control of your lives.
BTW, rationing isn't very fun. The people who have died due to rationing in other countries aren't really around to make the argument. They are dead due to government socialism.
