Yes, it's irritating. There should be some kind of penalty. At least Xs on the offender's profile to shame them.

someone mentioned that there used to be an auto checker that prevented that kind of thing which I think I have even run into in the past. It was mentioned that it no longer seemed to work reliably.

I'm bumping this in the hopes that some staff see it. Maybe someone could even flag it. My flag function doesn't work for some reason.

And have you seen the most annoying poster. It's not a human....it belongs to current and is a bot (software package). It automatically searches twitter and finds a tweet about what you just posted......it is what you said already, so TWITTERBOT just repeats it.

I am so annoyrd by TWITTERBOT.

    Down with TWITTERBOT

    ============================

the poster at the link said about TWITTERBOT:
I don't think I'm alone on this one, I fucking hate the twitter-bot. The reason I come to Current is to see what its members have to say about issues and to stay up to date. If I wanted to read nonsensical "tweets" I would register at Twitter, then put a shotgun in my mouth.

    How about it folks?

    twitter is for twits....................

    gee, that was original.

The double postings have gone on since I started here a few months ago, no matter how much you complain, it's not doing any good. Some dups will get removed but only if a staff member decides that a certain post is worthy the 'Editorial page' then all others get dup notices. Problem is nobody wants to take the time to do a search, and there are some that actually see the article but go to a different source and post it again, no names. I complained until I was blue, no good came of that. Twitter Bot - I had to cancel our email notifications that we received when comments where posted because of the stupid Bot, I wrote Mario, nothing.

Having been guilty of duplicating posts in the past, I know that sometimes it can be hard to avoid.

I agree about twitterbot. Also some articles on the scroll menu are left on there day after day.

I don't mind duplicate posts so much. I just vote the best one up and down the rest. What really drives me nuts is when a post has misleading tags. If I see something show up in a section in which it doesn't belong I vote it down immediately.

there is a script about duplicate posts, however, from my understanding, it doesn't always work, and current is trying to fix the problem.

There were times when i would submit the only and first article and then hours later someone or even the current "staff" would have the same post as the one I already submitted from hours before they did and there post happens to get on the top 10!!!!?

What's up with that Current? You did that to me NUMEROUS times!

It seems that Current used to have a much better duplicate catching system. When you would post something from the same url, it would warn you. If it was different, you would usually see the same story after posting it on the sidebar where similar stories are.

Lately it seems like neither one of those things has been happening. However, searching for the story doesn't always work either. Sometimes it seems like the system doesn't newly added stories for a while and it depends on the tagging too.

Another problem can be that the same story gets posted a few days later; for example the stephen hawkin/evolution post. It got a lot of interest, then disappeared, then a few days later someone else posted it and it got interest again. In that case the person searching for it wouldn't have seen it anywhere on the topic pages and probably assumed it wasn't posted.

If I post something and notice it's already posted, I will delete mine. The only case in which I won't do that is if it already has more than 1 comment on it, because I don't want to jip people out of their say. It would be cool if we could move all the comments from duplicate posts into the same post.

As for the evil hellspawn known as Twitterbot, it's a temporary function being used to test a future feature for the website. Staff promises it will go away soon, thankfully!

Hehehe, I hope they also solve the newsworthyness around here...as well as the longitude of how long a post should stay up, on the featured program-like thing....

Why do people go nutso over this? Yeah,... there's double posts, repeat posts & cloned articles. So what? That's what Current has been since it started; "legalize this", "climate that", "Bush & Obama these", "death those"!!! Such as,... hasn't there already been stories on Current's repeat stories?
For me,... I like to see multiple posts. It helps to sort out bias, lies and opinion. The point here should be these stories,... not who posted it first.

I wouldn't mind duplicate posts on the same subject or news subject if they covered it in different ways, multiple perspectives or used different angles on it.

What gets boring is the same stories with almost the same words and nothing new added to them. No added facts or deeper coverage gets very repetitive.

this is true. i search before i add an article, but it upsets me when someone else resubmits something i submitted a day earlier, when it was actually current.
There should be an auto-search for similar content when submitting, like digg.com has.
