Seal Sorrow: 90,000 Seals To Be Clubbed To Death

Image...
Wow: this is the first time I have seen a slaughter like this because the animal is in direct competition with our food source. Is this shocking to anyone else?

"JOHANNESBURG — Namibia's annual commercial seal hunt will go on despite objections by animal welfare groups, a government official said Monday.

Frans Tsheehama of the Namibian fisheries and marine resources ministry said that the season started on July 1 and will run until Nov. 15.

Hunters are expected to club over 90,000 seals, including 85,000 pups.

The hunt was expected to begin last week, but there was confusion over whether the killings had begun after numerous media reports that a South African-based animal rights activist was in negotiations to halt them."

Most marine mammals are endangered species.

You do not have to go all the way to Namibia to see this either. Right here in the US, federal courts have ordered suspending the Endangered Species act to allow the killing of marine mammals because failure to protect the environment, especially during the Bush/Republican Administration led to habitat loss and commercial overfishing of Salmon. California and Oregon had to severely restrict Salmon fishing seasons.

Many poachers are trying to shoot sea lions and seals because they eat fish. Pretty soon, there will be no fish AND no sea lions or seals.

That is so sick! People are such a waste of the planet's time.

I just keep losing faith in humanity one person at a time.

Im with the steak idea. Didn't my mother say there were starving children in Africa that would love a seal burger?

If all they're killing is pups their argument is specious. Pups are the ones that have the most valuable fur. if i were a south african I'd hit the beach with some really ugly colored non toxic permanent dye and see if they still want to kill them once they won't get any money for em.

Mind the hypocrisy, people. It's a sick and twisted practice, to be sure, but not unlike those routinely undertaken by the American public. Wearing them isn't anymore justifiable than eating them, and with these seals, at least their suffering is momentary, whereas most of the animals we exploit are tormented for months or years without respite (apart from death).

NOOO between this and The Cove I just don't even know what to do with myself. Humans really don't know how to let nature do it's thing by itself. Obviously we influence everything because were the biggest consumers, etc but fuuuck what did the sealion pups do to deserve this??

    From the article:

"AJ Cady of the International Fund for Animal Welfare said that the industry is "collapsing" worldwide, citing a recent European Union ban on the import of seal products combined with the global economic downturn. In this year's Canadian harvest, sealers killed less than a third of their quota on weak demand.

"The great question here is who is really buying these things?" Cady said. "The cruelty is so obvious."

Humans are killing tha natural balance of Earth one day at a time, with no care for the after effects. It's sick that we believe we can do whatever we want for our own gain rather than respect the beautiful, peaceful creatures that have lived here LONG before us. This is wrong, and I have a funny feeling this is NOT about fish, but about FUR and PROFIT.

    Sickos!

But God forbid man stop his consumptive ways taking two thirds of the fish, and the forests, and the farmlands, and polluting the air, water, etc. What a bogus excuse to continue this barbaric act for profit. Whoever can pick up a club and do this is for sure not human.

I see no purpose of clubbing seals. Do seals go into peoples gardens and eat up all their tomato plants? Do they threaten people by acting aggressively when they show up in someones back yard? (Hey, y'know, all those cookie cutter subdivisions in the antarctic!) There is no legitimate reason for it! Do they feel like using the fur to stay warm? Use Gore-Tex!

The killing of these seals for fur, which it mostly is, may be another type of "fake" fur.
I don't know that for certain...but it would not surprise me.

About wearing or buying products that have fur on them.
Some of the "fake" fur that lines coats can, in reality be dog fur.
It is common practice in some countries that make clothes we wear, in the US and in Europe, to skin dogs, line coats and call it fake fur.
It's cheaper than making real "fake" fur.
