A widespread computer attack that began July 4 knocked out the Web sites of several U.S. government agencies as well as sites in South Korea, in a cyber foray that South Korean intelligence officials believe was carried out by North Korean or pro-Pyongyang forces.

The Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the holiday weekend and into this week, according to officials inside and outside the government. South Korean Internet sites began experiencing problems Tuesday.

U.S. officials refused to publicly discuss details of the cyber attack.

But South Korea's National Intelligence Service, the nation's main spy agency, told a group of South Korean lawmakers Wednesday it believes that North Korea or North Korean sympathizers in the South "were behind" the attacks, according to an aide to one of the lawmakers briefed on the information.

    • Note that these were denial of service attacks, not digital "breaking and entering." That doesn't mean it isn't serious! Computers overloaded by DOS attacks are inaccessible to those authorized to use them, those who might desperately need to access them in an emergency. But the difference is important.
