Woman faces charges of beating fawn to death after finding it lying in her garden

Image...
" 'I killed it - I killed it dead,' " he recalled her saying, because she had worked hard on her plants. "And I'd kill it again." He said he was sympathetic to the attention the incident created.

Clifford Johnson, another neighbor, said, "She's scared, she's 75, she made a horrible mistake, but it's gotten to the point where people are calling her and talking about killing her."

She should be punished!!! Who beats a deer to death???

If I saw it in my garden, I would have thought 'how sweet, wonder if I can pet it' not 'let's kill it!'

I don't see the crime. hunters kill dear by the boatload, and the simple fact that this woman used a club instead of a gun should not make this a criminal act. The dear is not a sacred animal.
we kill dear, we cook dear, we eat dear, we make tacky candlesticks and knife handles out of their antlers, we mount their heads as trophys.
i wounder if this woman will taxidermy her kill too?

    Wackjob woman.

We have a doe and twin fawns on our property. Another doe and a single fawn is also making a home around here. We are enjoying watching them grow and run around the property. Wouldn't even think of harming any of them

    I love stories like this.

    1) Stop getting upset. It sayed that the deer (notice the way I spell deer not dear) was lying in her garden alone. Haven't you guys seen bambi? Oh wait, you have and you think that a baby deer (fawn) can survive with the help of its forest friends. Fawn, like other mammals require milk to stay alive, and without its mother it would have none. This is probably why the fawn didn't put up much of a fight or even try to run away. The mother was likely killed by a car, and the fawn would have probably stumbled into someones backyard and gotten killed by their dog if not this lady. Someone could have bottlefed it, but what would be the point? It isn't like deer are endangered in Ohio, and even if it was released into the wild again, it would probably just go try to get food from a hunter and be killed anyways.

    2) If you read the article, she isn't being charged with a hunting violation. She is being charged with animal abuse. It would have been much more impressive if the 75 year old lady would have bludgened a full grown deer to death, but that sounds rather impossible. Anyone who has hit a deer in their car knows that those things can withstand a sizable impact and still bound back into the woods.

    3) Clearly she is going to get off after PETA stops calling this sheriffs office. Who in rural ohio would convict a little old lady of doing this? Also, since when is killing an animal creulity to animals? Here is a link to the Ohio law. Does it meet the definition? You decide.

Just saw the story on my local news. They are saying she was scared baby deer would attack her and she hit it with a shovel until it was dead. The neighbor said she told him she was going to put the dead body on the lawn as a warning to other deer.

Walt is spinning in his grave...and what about Thumper?
You would think that at least one of the seven dwarfs...sorry...little people...would have come to Bambi's rescue...Doesn't this woman understand that her garden is not for her consumption but belongs to the forest creatures. Man, someone get her to a Disney re-education camp!
She'll probably get more time than Donte' Stallworth, 30 days....but he just killed a man.

you ever seen deer go through a garden in the winter. it's madness and requires all kinds of defenses to stop. I'd kill'em too if i could and i wanted to deal with a dead carcass.

you really wanna make this a criminal case? it's not even a mental case.

pretty logical if you live around deer (though maybe a gun or knife next time ok lady?)

After beating it until tender, you would have found it lying across my Weber grill! She coulda kept it to herself and shared it with others for dinner!!!

Would this be news if after she killed the fawn, she ate it???? just wondering.... ummm moral of the the story... if your going to kill it at least eat it or use it for something....

I'd agree that she overreacted for sure, but I have to admit, I did laugh upon reading the quote, "I killed it - I killed it dead, and I'd kill it again." Just imagining an old woman saying that is pretty funny to me.

Now that I've said that, PETA will probably launch a campaign against me claiming that I'm in league with animal killers.

"Frey said he has received dozens of e-mails from across the country urging him to prosecute the case to its fullest."

    BURN THE WITCH
    BURN THE WITCH

who are these losers that want to punish a 75 year old "country girl" for defending her crop?

do you city slickers actually think this is the FIRST time that farmers had to protect their crops from marauding varmints?

I've been called in to hunt coyotes that kill calves, I know of people who've asked if I could kill rabbits that eat all their flowers (they are tasty, too)...

bunch of damn concrete jungle ignoramuses.
