Greenpeace hangs protest banner on Mt. Rushmore

Image...
Greenpeace activists draped an enormous banner next to the carved stone faces of Mount Rushmore today, calling for more-aggressive action to fight climate change.

The banner showed President Obama's face -- Greenpeace said it was an unfinished portrait, implying that Obama's legacy was in question -- and the words "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming."

A trio of climbers unfurled it about 12:30 p.m. Eastern time, over a rock face next to the image of Abraham Lincoln on the far right side of the South Dakota landmark.

Less than two hours later, a Greenpeace spokesman said all three, plus eight other Greenpeace activists at the site, had been taken into custody by park authorities.

Patty Rooney, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service, confirmed that there had been arrests. Rooney said prosecutors had not yet decided what charges activists would face.

Rooney said that park service workers had not been able to take down the banner, or assess any damage to the 67-year-old monument, because high winds made those tasks difficult. She said that the first task for park workers would be "getting our people safely up there, and getting them [the Greenpeace activists] safely down."

The demonstration at Mount Rushmore was one of several staged by Greenpeace today, seeking to influence world leaders meeting at the Group of Eight summit in L'Aquila, Italy.

I generally think Greenpeace gives environmentalists a bad name, but this is actually pretty awesome.

He is just Washington's pawn, he has no real power! Your asking the wrong person for help? Obama cannot make any decision's, the GOVT officials make all the decisions. He is just so they didn't bomb us for George Bush's stupidity as the last President. Obama wishes he could run the country, if he could he sure would be doing a better job than these freaks have ever done yet?

Come on Ras and Deb. No one benefits if we don't stay on topic.

I've read two articles today about Greenpeace. The first was that they took over four power stations. That kind of thing has the short term benefit of alerting people to the vulnerability of such stations. But overall it hurts the cause of environmentalism, making it seem violent.

This Rushmore thing was the second. I like this much better. Just as much publicity, but symbolic and non-violent.

    Hey Illinois! GO SOLAR!

    Artist: Boston
    Song Title: "Corporate America"

Who can stop de-evolution of the human race?
Look at you, Corporate America, you're in disgrace
Globalize; cigarettes, business jets, you love it
Maximize; but you can take your bottom line and shove it

Gotta get away (gotta get away)
Gotta get away, but I need a little help tonight
What 'ya gonna say (what 'ya gonna say)
What 'ya gonna say when you never even seen the light
    See the light

Corporate America, look out, look out
Corporate America, who's gonna save us, who's gonna save us now?

You and I; DVDs, SUVs and cyberspace
Flying blind, virtual reality is in our face
This Earth desecrated by the human race
Now what's it worth? When do we evacuate to outer space?

Corporate America, look out, look out
Corporate America, who's gonna save us, who's gonna save us now?

I see the future in the past, the reckless ride of modern man,
Just took the corner way too fast,
    Flattened everything that stands
Fooled by the sales pitch for progress at a dizzy pace
We idolize the filthy rich for giving us synthetic taste
    Computer calls, urban sprawl
Is the world a better place, is the world a better place?

Fare thee well, global extinction's forever
So what the hell, order your Mercedes in leather
Veal crates, ozone holes, and toxic waste
And don't count out religious hate
Who can survive this manmade fate?

    Gotta get away
Gotta get away, and I need a little help tonight
    What 'ya gonna say
Wha 'ya gonna say when you couldn't even see the light
    See the light
    Yeah

allow them to pay for the expenses of the Parks Department for removing the banner, too....

yeah, like if they didn't do this, nobody would be aware of global warming.... riiiiiiiight.....

any penalties on the books for "defacing national monuments"?

this is different from tagging the Lincoln Memorial in what ways?

This is ridiculous. Any truly aggressive action taking on climate change could devastate an already battered U.S. economy. (Ex. Obama's climate bill). More aggressive action simply means more gov't regulation. I think some action must be taken towards using greener technology, but it should be slow and steady. There are numerous examples around the globe of how gov't regulation to benefit the environment just doesn't work. Just look at Spain, and Australia. I mean global warming has not even been proven as being caused by human interaction with the environment.

Not sure I agree with the tactic, but if nothing else, it's certainly ballsy.

    Yawn.

I remember Greenpeace from a U2 video... and I remember little else about them. Now that you have my attention, tell me so...me...th...ing... oops, my attention has already been diverted. New times call for new tactics. Ketchup.

BTW, nice choice hanging your sign over Lincoln's face. Of the 4, you desecrate him. Classy.

That's pretty cool. I'm not really a fan of any group that pushes their beliefs on others, but, that's pretty cool.

I don't know how I feel about them doing that on a national monument like Mount Rushmore. It seems pretty rude, actually. But I do applaud them for getting attention.

i'm all for peaceful protesting even though i think their message is incorrect. Just don't do it on national monuments.

  •

Right message. Right time. Wrong place. If they keep it up they will be "in the dog house" with PETA. I think most Americans would agree with the message Greenpeace was trying to convey here but the delivery is still going to get a negative reaction.

I do not understand why people seem to think using the monuments to get a message across is so wrong. If nothing is destroyed and no innocent people are hurt or put in danger I do not see the issue. Yes, they could have put the banner up somewhere else but no one would have cared. The Alice Pauls and King Jr.s of the last century didn't just hand out flyers or post blog articles.
