Why does faith have to be an issue? Can God and science be compatible? Francis Collins thinks so and he wants to run the NIH.-

Mm. I think on the individual level, science and religion can be compatible. Rational people who follow religion can fit most advances in science and the understanding of our world into their belief structure; they don't -have- to be mutually exclusive. Unfortunately, many people I know don't seem to be able to mesh things like that, or are far too into literal translations to accept other alternative opinions of how to interpret religious texts.
However, on a level such as this... in any office like this where so much scientific research is up to be dictated, he really should not be talking about his faith. It makes absolutely no sense. He shouldn't be talking about "God and science being compatible", because that is an individual opinion on reality.
He should be talking about what he plans to do as the head of the NIH, not about his personal religious convictions. It shouldn't matter if he's Christian, atheist, Satanist, Hindu, whatever. That should have no bearing on the job he performs as the head of the NIH.
It irks me to see him trying to merge his personal beliefs about a higher power and the afterlife into a purely scientific role. I'm not comfortable with this guy in this position, because of that.

I do not know if his religious belief will get in the way of his administration of NIH.
As for his claim that religion and science are compatible - that is rubbish. In so far as religion depends upon a notion of the supernatural there is no room for religion in science.

I am sort of conflicted about it. One of my Facebook Friends who read this said she was "profoundly disappointed."
