When I was on Windows, VLC was my 'fall back'. Now that I'm on Ubuntu, VLC is my 'go to'. It's really quite awesome. It doesn't fail.

Best player there is, IMO
Has all the codex already built in.... awesome!

And with it you can stream right from your desktop to the Internet like a radio or TV. Could be one more step past twitter to desktop broadcasting.
