HypeM revolutionising music charts? The Twitter Music Chart

Image...
Popular online music blogpost the Hype Machine (HypeM) decided they'd had enough of online music charts and their apparent lack of integrity, what with the often blurred lines between engagement with and manipulation of the chart' data.

The way their chart works is that they monitor Twitter for links pointing to tracks on the Hype Machine. 'Each of those tweets a number of points based on the number of followers (and the ratio of friends & followers) that person has.' They then 'add up all the points and figure out which tracks are tweeted by either the most influential twitter users, or by the largest group. Simple.'

There are a few users that are skeptical about their scoring methods, with them pointing out that a Twitterer with a vast amount of followers (i.e. Ashton Kutcher) could basically influence the whole day' chart. As the user wrote: "I’m not sure I want the star of “Dude Where’s My Car” to have that much influence over my listening options" but also reckons that HypeM will have accounted for such users.

I've gotta admit I'm a big fan of HypeM already and this all sounds really cool, and has already been offering up some great tracks. Just wonder how it's going to affect their die-hard users that aren't on Twitter.

Hat's off to them. This approach is raw, reliable and shows the math behind it. Great move.
