See the link below for a video with the details ... basically the vibrating film causes a magnet to move between coils ... which is effective in light breezes ...

" ... Shawn Frayne, a 28-year-old inventor ... saw the need for small-scale wind power to juice LED lamps and radios in the homes of the poor. ...took a new tack, ... Frayne's device, ... is a taut membrane fitted with a pair of magnets that oscillate between metal coils. Prototypes have generated 40 milliwatts in 10-mph slivers of wind, making his device 10 to 30 times as efficient as the best microturbines. ..."

They'd need to be. Microturbines pretty much suck. There seems to be no attached cost beneifit analysis so I assume it's still not fiscally effective.
Good that theyre getting closer though. I wonder if something can be worked out using old fashioned computer tape? It's strong, cheap, a ribbon, manufactured roll to roll, and the whole thing is magnetic.

FYI: I mentioned this in today's round up of news: http://current.com/items/90373734_third-world-wind-power-first-look.htm

If you google windbelt you can see his other ideas for it's use. ie.: You can put them inside duct work and they can power the temp. readings! The air flow itself powers the windbelt How cool is that!!! No more changing those batteries.
