Did China's nuclear tests kill thousands and doom future generations?

"Enver Tohti remembers the week that it rained dust. That summer of 1973 he was in elementary school in Xinjiang Province, China’s westernmost region, which is inhabited mostly by Uygurs, one of the country’s minority ethnic groups. “There were three days that earth fell from the sky, without wind or any sort of storm. The sky was deadly silent—no sun, no moon,” he recalls. When the kids asked what was happening, the teacher told them that there was a storm on Saturn (its Chinese name translates into “soil planet”). Tohti believed her. It was only years later that he realized it was radioactive dust raised by the test detonation of a nuclear bomb within the province.

Three decades on, Tohti, now a medical doctor, is launching an investigation into the toll still being taken—and one that the Chinese government steadfastly refuses to acknowledge. A few hundred thousand people may have died as a result of radiation from at least 40 nuclear explosions carried out between 1964 and 1996 at the Lop Nur site in Xinjiang, which lies on the Silk Road. Almost 20 million people reside in Xinjiang, and Tohti believes that they offer unique insight into the long-term impact of radiation, including the relatively little studied genetic effects that may be handed down over generations. He is establishing the Lop Nur project at Sapporo Medical University in Japan with physicist Jun Takada to evaluate these consequences.

For Tohti, the priority is helping the sick. In March the French government announced that it would compensate civilian victims of its nuclear tests, which were conducted in Polynesia. In 2008 the Chinese state news service Xinhua reported that its government is paying undisclosed subsidies to military personnel involved in the tests. Tohti wants aid extended to affected civilians, adding that 80 percent do not have health care. “Right now, they can’t afford treatment,” he says. “So all they can do is wait to die.”

    • Let us not forget the Murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children in Nagasaki and Hiroshima all because America couldn't fight fair.

When nations go to war fair sometimes goes by the way. We can only try to operate by the Geneava Conventions. Maybe the other side will to. The Japaneese chose not to. Study your history. Japan was not going to surrender. A low estimate for invasion fatalities is more than a million. That is in civilian losses. U.S. military deaths were estimated at a half a million.Do the math.
I detest war. This said, there are a lot of nations, cults, and people that would do us harm. Thankfully there are a lot of good men and women that have and still do protect us.

Actually, there are few nations that would do "us" harm. Many cults, even within and comprising of citizens of this country, do not have the power nor the means to do "us" harm. I do not believe that there is this "World against the US" scheme that the government and the media keeps trying to push. And the few nations that do wish to do "us" harm only wish to do harm because of an act that America is choosing to do. America chooses to blindly support Israel and defend Israel for any and everything that Israel is going through. So, America is bringing on the hate of these few nations, on its own. Do you really think it's this comic book foe scheme "they hate us because of our freedoms"? I am not a muslim nor a Jew for that matter, nor an anti-semite. I just do not like that this government is giving 30 billion dollars in aid to a country that is fully developed and modernized and bringing on heat from other nations in the process.

How many times has America not been in a war/invasion/conflict/etc in the past 233 years?

Then what's to stop the jews from nuking the muslims? What's to stop the muslims from Nuking america? What's to keep america from nuking North Korea? I disagree with that statement. Even in war tact is evident. If you do not have tact and if "all gloves are off" then it is a free-for-all that just spirals out of control. Also, if that were true, we would have all been dead several times over.

If our luck holds out and we don't blow each other up, common sense and survival instinct will stop us. Since you brought up comic book scenarios, here's a doozy. The Jews start playing fair and the Palistinians throw thier arms open in the spirit of cooperation. If you think that either side in the ongoing middle east crisis is right, far sightedness ends at the tip of your nose.

Nope. Neither side is right. To me, it is all nothing more than a bunch of 13 year old kids having a pissing contest. Who has the biggest dick ER....I mean...arms stockpile. I doubt that any of them actually believe in the "Gods" they say they represent. I honestly believe it is all about who can manhandle the region best. (with $$$ being a large contribution). I kept trying to wrap my head around how all this hub-bub could be about some god and then I thought "Wait...what's 'better' than god? What could REALLY move someone?" Money was the answer I came to.

The jews need to stop pushing their Holocaust on everyone and get over themselves. The muslims need to chill out and stop stoning women and hating gays. And America needs to realize the truth....WW2 is OVER and Arab-Israel conflict is nothing more than a bad joke in the world and is really starting to screw America up in world opinion. Tell the Jews to chill their jets and tell the Muslims to get out of their caves (both physically and metaphorically).

Obama's next Press Conference should be really short and sweet.

"Israel: no more freebies, stop calling me, stop threatening the Arab world, and get a fucking life. The Arab World: women are equal, getting stoned is only good in groupies and hippie buses, Islam?...seriously, and get a fucking life...No seriously, the middle east, STOP THE BULLSHIT!" He should close this with "In Harmony". From the Little Mermaid series. (google the lyrics)

    • Looking at this article reminds us that we're so lucky in
America. I really feel sorry for every single oppressed
Uygur in China's Xinjiang province. What a tragedy!
Right now we need to send a message to Beijing saying
America won't tolerate nuclear testing anywhere.

Even North Korea needs to understand the dangers.
Unless they stop their irresponsible testing, a Lop
Nur type of disaster might be happening there too.
All people reading this need to look down the road.

    • Also, if we did away with nuclear power, thousands would die rather quickly. The medical isotopes used to fight cancer and other diseases are created in fissionable reactors. Should we ban those too since all it takes is an explosive to turn it into a dirty bomb?

Are you serious? Are we going to outlaw basements since people have died of radon poisoning? Or maybe we should get rid of concrete and bananas since both contain large amounts of naturally occurring radiative isotopes.

You know that a single....just one trans Continental flight results in more radiation exposure than working in a nuclear power plant. Airline pilots have the largest occupational exposure of all people in the world...by a lot. Should we do away with that as well?

    • That's so unfortunate. They're always such a tight lipped and rather oppressive government, not caring much for the citizens of their own country apparently. So sad.

    • If we survive as a species, future generations will not believe how close or how many times we have been to the precipice. When will we learn that there is nothing safe about radioactive substances in relation to organic life on this planet? Even when used in the medical field it is used to kill unwanted organisms. Our bassackward thought process will kill us yet.

    • blueghost - what a naive way to look at the world. Progress marches on - even if it is destructive. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were fully justified at the time - and not only saved hundreds of thousands lives on both sides - but also stopped Stalin from marching on to Western Europe. As inhumane and catastrophic as the two detonations were - the history proved them right. Japan is now a staunch ally of the US - and it used to be a very violent, aggressive nation throughout history. No - please don't apply this logic to the US - why is it the liberals hate their own country so much?
No one is giving up the nukes they already have. After the WWII - the nukes were the only thing that kept peace between the USSR and the US. Mutually assured distruction was enough of a deterrent then - and it remains so today. In case of Israel - they are surrounded by the enemy - sworn enemy that would "throw the Jews into the sea" - if they could. So for Israel - nukes assure its existence - and notice that there haven't been any 6-on-1 wars in that part of the world since they acquired theirs. Study history - it will enlighten you on the future.
Now the case with MadJob in Iran - these folks don't mind dying as martyrs, they don't mind sacrificing millions of their own citizens - after all - in their sick mind, they'd be arranging for an early meeting with Allah. Can the world afford for the MadJob to have the nukes? I stronly believe that we can not. Israel will justifyably act (since US has no more balls under Hussein) - to take out Iranian Nuke capability - they simply can not afford to wait until it is too late. Funny thing is - they will be condemned by ALL - and will also be thanked by all via back channels - becuase like they did before with Ozirak in Iraq - they's be doing a service to the entire world.
NKorea is going to try to sell theirs to the highest bidder - after all, that is their only export - and believe me - there are plenty of consumers for this shit. Al Queda, Iran, etc. And what if we have a "nuclear event" in NY, DC or elsewhere? What then? How do we go on, how do we repopulate that which is uninhabitable, how to we respond and to who? We simply need to board those NK ships - and that means Hussein needs to grow some balls - an unlikely event, given how he just likes to go around and apologize... We're fucked... Sorry - by apologizing, bowing down and cheeck-spreading - you don't appease the evil enemy.

You make very good points, actually I agree with everything you said. But you have to also think about why they hate us so much.

Did they just decide one day to hate the U.S. and Israel?

We need to change our ways, or we will just go from one enemy to the next, for the rest of our history.

Yeah but those countries haven't always been friendly to us either. There is a long standing misunderstanding that will not change with one president. I think it's dangerous having one who believes he can. Maybe he is just putting the hope out there... but I think North Korea is pretty scary. Then again, I guess we're pretty scary.

    • igordy:

Guys - your opinions are respected - but here's something to think about. We're not evil - we just have needs. We're big, mighty, we feed the world - practically the entire world - and it would be nice if the dog didn't bite the hand that feeds it. I don't agree with a position that you need to come down to the level of your enemy - to extend a hand of friendship to one who calls you satan - Chavez, MadJob, etc. One needs to persistently choke them off, isolate them and if everything else fails - take out a big stick and threaten them - and better be ready to use it if the dog goes mad. Take a look at NK - compare to SK - dark vs. light, hunger vs. prosperity, etc, etc. There are some very telling sattelite fotos - google for them - wow!!! All the differences are due to the IDEOLOGY - here's your communism/socialism vs. Capitalism. Anyone with romantic doubts about Socialism need to get a reality check right there!!! You have to be an in-the-pink-cloud-flying leftard wacko to think that Socialism can EVER be superior to Capitalism as an economic system!!! The old Eastern Germany vs. Western Germany - same comparison. Now for all those who are trying to build Socialism in the good old USA - what a bunch of fuckheads - your damage will be quite expensive to fix and will take a looooong time to reverse... But that's a topic for an entirely another converstation...

    • Yup, good Idea. Then the only people that would have nukes would be Iran and North Korea. That sounds MUCH better......

I am pretty sure that us using a nuke on Japan during WW2 was justified considering the amount of casualties that we (and them for that matter) would of sustained in a n invasion of the Japanese homeland. It is easy to look in the past a criticize decisions made 60+ years ago.

    • Nuclear bombs and fission are NEVER an option.

the Peacemakers need to ensure that nuclear bombs are taken away from every single country.

Ironically, the only country that ever used a nuclear weapon on another was the grand ole' USA and we're the biggest hypocrites of all.

Once a nation gets its hands on a nuclear capability of any kind they just cannot wait to weaponize it and try it out.

This is completely and utterly UNACCEPTABLE.

If no country had nukes, there wouldn't be the burning DESIRE to use them against others.

      Israel is a prime example.

I say take away all nukes everywhere starting with the US, Russia, China, Israel, Iran. And see how things change forever!

    • How is it that He or she is not sick?
Also in 1973 there were already satellites that could detect these kinds of detonations and the radiation they release. In the late 70's South Africa tested a small bomb and by the next day everyone knew about it.

Not that I dont give credit to the Chinese test but the minute the clip mentions the Uygurs, I sense where this is going.

Why do you think that because you havent heard of it that it didnt happen? Nobody said that it was a secret and I dont doubt the us was fully aware. This info has probably always been here but because of the ethnic tension in that province any thing related to it has become newsworthy.
