During an interview with Develop magazine (via IGN) Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski commented that he believes the future of all shooters meets up with role-playing games. Citing both BioShock and Deus Ex as examples, the Gears of War frontman thinks that both these games were successful and may even influence the direction of his next installment of the Gears of War franchise.
'When I first saw Bioshock I thought, "how is this going to sell?"' said Bleszinski. 'As a nerd I thought it was amazing but I was worried that a fifteen year old kid would pick it up and think "what the f**k am I looking at"?' 'But it pleased me to no end that the game did so well. I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed.'
Whether or not Gears of War 3 will see players accruing experience points in order to advance the main characters remains to be seen. We're hoping that there's something more than a third similar game.
