Christoher Hitchens vs. Dinesh D'Souza? I am not sure if a debate between the two would be time well spent. I have not read any of Hitchens' works, but I have read enough snippets in news magazines and book reviews to know his hostility towards religion. My question is, with regard to Hitchens, is: Does he paint all Christians with the same brush? I've read Skip Porteous, Paul Blanshard, Dan Barker and they all share a common trait: They equate Bible thumping fundamentalism and greasy haired televangelists with authentic Christianity. This rather myopic view is because of their religious backgrounds- rather shallow, without any real depth. Blanshard, if I recall correctly, was a Congregationalist minister, and Barker and Porteous, pentecostal types. It seems to me that without the Catholic Church, social activism, social justice, and plain old caring for the needs of the community would just be a shadow of itself. We have Catholic hospitals, social service agencies, adoption agencies, soup kitckens, shelters, "safe houses" for women escaping abuse, groups like The Catholic Worker and Maryknoll, among hundreds, if not thousands of religious orders providing for the poor and unwanted. Religion is far from perfect, and the same could be said for atheism, as both are comprised of human beings, with all their frailties and faults. I believe it is secular humanism that has led to many of our society's ills. Religion- authentic religion- has done more for the less fortunate and downtrodden than secular humanism and atheism ever will. I stand with D'Souza on this one.

D'Souza is an intellectual light weight and a lap dog of the conservative right.

Hitchens will wipe the floopr with D'Souza. After all, Hitchens is arguing for truth and reason, where as D'Souza will defend ignorance ans superstition.
