Obama Seeks to End Antibiotic Use to Spur Animal Growth

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration announced Monday that it would seek to ban many routine uses of antibiotics in farm animals in hopes of reducing the spread of dangerous bacteria in humans.

In written testimony to the House Rules Committee, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, principal deputy commissioner of food and drugs, said feeding antibiotics to healthy chickens, pigs and cattle — done to encourage rapid growth — should cease. And Dr. Sharfstein said that farmers should no longer be able to use antibiotics in animals without the supervision of a veterinarian.

Both practices lead to the development of bacteria that are immune to many treatments, he said.

The hearing was held to discuss a measure proposed by Representative Louise M. Slaughter, Democrat of New York, who is chairwoman of the House Rules Committee. It would ban seven classes of antibiotics important to human health from being used in animals, and it would restrict the uses of other antibiotics to therapeutic and some preventive uses.

The legislation is supported by the American Medical Association, among other groups, but opposed by farm organizations like the National Pork Producers Council. The farm lobby’s opposition makes its passage unlikely, but advocates are hoping to include the measure in the legislation to revamp the health care system.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has estimated that as much as 70 percent of antibiotics used in the United States are given to healthy chickens, pigs and cattle to encourage theirgrowth or to prevent illnesses.

The use of antibiotics for “purposes other than for the advancement of animal or human health should not be considered judicious use,” Dr. Sharfstein said in his written testimony. “Eliminating these uses will not compromise the safety of food.”

    • Though each of us does have an insane amount of consumer power in not purchasing hormone infused animals who've been forced to live torturous lives in factories, we all for some reason think we can't make a difference so we keep on doing what we're doing.

Or worse - many of us have no idea of the ridiculous things we're putting in our bodies because we naively trust that FDA is looking out for us and will keep us safe. Perhaps many people who don't know would like to know but are kept too busy trying to make money to feed this stuff to their kids to look into it.

You talk of these torturous factories how many have you actually visited? What is your criteria for being a torturous factory? Are you talking about chickens, beef, pork, one or all? I'm very curious to know what critters and conditions you are talking about. I hope you will answer this to help me understand your reasons for the comments you make. Thanks, Don

    • I think I rather pay the extra $3 for the healthy chicken, than getting some crazy cancer or have my children born retarded... Cause & effect my man cause & effect, the $ you will save in genetically enhanced foods will not be able to cover the diseases it causes that kill thousands of Americans everyday but, the government doesn't tell you that. Fuck KFC and their retarded chicken, screw all the big corporations that make us sick and dumber everyday.

    • And what about hormones like rbgh that are still in dairy products? Monsanto may have sold it to Eli Lilly, but that doesn't mean it isn't still in dairy products especially when the current FDA and USDA prohibit consumer disclosure on labels. *We need labels that tell us if the food we are eating has GMOS in them.* But again, Michael Taylor just being hired back to the FDA through the Monsanto revolving door in a very high profile position along with Tom Vilsack Monsanto Man running it doesn't give me much comfort that this will happen. It seems like Obama does just enough to keep certain groups happy with handing them a carrot while really just going along with business as usual on the whole. If you are going to take antibiotics out of animals, then damn it go all the way so our food will be truly healthy.

How about going after the companies next that are also poisoning people with Aspartame? Let's see just how far this goes, or if we ever hear about any other moves again. You hand out carrots, now let's see some sticks where they need to be given out. Hold companies like Monsanto truly accountable for POISONING this planet and the health of humans. Start with banning Round Up and calling a moratorium on all GMOS until REAL tests are done and not gagged by Monsanto in collusion with the FDA and USDA that is supposed to CARE about our health!

    • Long overdue. Our food and water supply should not be poisoned. Should be a fundamental right NOT to be poisoned.

Animals will benefit to some degree also. Costs will increase to some degree and people will reduce their animal food intake, and welfare standards will necessarily have to go. Animals will have to be kept much healthier without the corporate convenience of keeping them drugged.

And anything that reduces the profitability of factory farming, I'm in favor of.

    • This is dumb - Man's life expectancy has only increased though the years. You'd think that if this was really an important issue, then there'd be substantial consequences for eating treated animals. Maybe he'll ban preservatives, artificial coloring, and the deep fryer at McDonalds!!! There are so many variables that affect the quality of food and the potential that it may be home to one form of bacteria or another - Put a damn label on the meat - I would prefer to have the option to pay less and get more of something that could possibly be slightly worse... just like fast food - the option is there.

    • TrilLogic: That's where the vet comes in. That would eliminate the unnecessary use or abuse of antibiotics.

TommyTooThumbs: We could stand to eat less- smaller portions would help. it's bad enough we've become less and less healthy over the years; not to mention our world image as fat gun-toting windbags with a hankering for law-suits.

Three Cheers for you!! Maybe people need to stop giving their kids a shot everytime they get a runny nose etc etc. You hit it right on the head, there are so many variables and so much of what we feed and do to our bodies is in it's infancy it is pretty hard to draw absolute links to problems or problems vs benefits. We worry so much about what we do to ourselves, what we really need to be scared of is what nature fires at us. We tend to think science can cure all but every now and again nature tosses out something bad that science can't quite fix or cure.

    • It seems like Obama is throwing the baby out with the bath water....I understand getting rid of the anti-biotic that lead to dangerous bacteria but what about the ones that don't?

    • The cost is worth it with our food and water supply. Anything that goes into your body daily is worth taking the time to make it quality.

    • Now if a farmer has to consult a vet to give antibiotics, things could get expensive for the farmer and the resulting animals smaller. Thus, making things more expensive for us. It is a great idea,... I hope it helps... but realize it comes at a cost.

problem is that every1 cant afford organic food... that stuff is expensive dude. Id love to eat organic all the time but im a college student and more often than not flat broke. I wish organic food was cheaper, for all of the health reasons, but mostly for the fact that it tastes so much better than the processed quasi-food that companies like tyson and smithfield use.

    • Great. Now hold factory farms accountable for the toxic feces ridden sludge that causes more bacteria in our food and pollutes our waterways and the inhumane treatment of these animals to begin with. That along with banning the GMO corn and soy they are fed. Of course that would mean standing up to Monsanto, and you can't do that if you keep rehiring their cronies to the FDA.

    • there is such a thing as "organic, free range" chickens ya know. put your freaking money where your mouth is,....literally!!! these guys will be out of business faster than the gov-mint can make a law outlawing drugs in food.
The best political action any individual can do is put their money where their convictions are.

Next issue,..how to eliminate all the chemicals and drugs that get into our air or water supply and alter life/plants. It cant be done....we are screwed....
