It is now seen as an article of faith that the world suffers from overpopulation but exactly who are there too many of? You, me, my friends? For World Population Day 2009, we should be celebrating our increased numbers and looking forward to more not less of the earth’s richest resource, humanity. Volunteers present the case in this inspiring riposte to modern Malthusians.

    • I really enjoyed this video. Furthermore, I whole heartedly agree with Sillyho's response. I couldn't have put it better.

Could someone please tell me how we can be overpopulated when less than 10% of this country is occupied by humans?

      Well done to Worldwrite!

    • Gosh this is very interesting and a great video for so many reasons. I agree totally with the wonderful people in the video - there never has or never will be 'too' many people on the planet and we should definitely reject and challenge any attack on our numbers, which this short piece goes through very eloquently. It looks at the scare-mongering of the population control lobbies as well as some popular, but warped ideas and gives their own conclusion:

      - is poverty the result of overpopulation? NO
      - is environmenal degradation the result of overpopulation? NO
      - is space shortage an issue if the world population continues to grow? NO
      - will we run out of resources? NO

This video has a very important message to be heard in a time when the human being has begun to be put at the back of our minds and when we have been subsumed by a culture of limits. Great stuff.

    • It's people who have and will make this world better and better. To me it is mind boggling to live in a time when we are told, as if it is fact, that we need to limit humans. Why? How will stopping the number of people being born solve any of our problems? For the idea of over population to be taken at all seriously shows, sadly, that we don't think much of ourselves - worse, we don't hold out much hope for those not even born!
I love this video - i would like to do a lot more celebration of us.

    • Great video spot. Perhaps it is just me, but the people who most talk about over population seem to be Caucasian. Even this video seems to point to this. Each of the... opponents(?) of some system of sanctioned population control seem to be ethnically from places that nobody wants to live, like India. I've never heard anyone say that Denver needs more filth piled in the street, perhaps a few wondering cows, and throw in some monkeys, and we all have to agree to NEVER clean it up. Seen, smelt, and touched it all with my own senses. The thought of America or Europe become something similar to India or China scares me to death!
The video was good in a simple propaganda sort of way, but nearly all of the commentators are disqualified to speak on the subject due to the fact that their families are from places that are the terrestrial equivalent of Hades. The families living in file cabinets in Shanghai can have it. Political problem my ass! It is what it is, and that is that these people on the video must try to preserve themselves, because i didn't see a one i would save, or allow to breed under my imaginary eugenics/population/apocalypse scenario. To answer her question, "Yes, the population we want to control are your friends." In summation, it doesn't matter what you think about it, when somebody with the means and will decides to implement really aggressive "control", your dissent will be a pile of ash and bone. Have a nice day :)

    • ImissLaura:

ImissLaura, what are you talking about? On your last comment about progressive views like those of the makers of this film, you obviously missed their fundamental point. If the demons of control were to narrow in on us, we are not helpless victims who will surrender to the attack. The point of this film is that human beings are capable people who will make their lives and their world, not the other way around.
