A proposed plan to solve California’s budget crisis would reduce the state’s prison population by 27,000, it was reported Tuesday, as opposition to the new fiscal deal mounted. The Los Angeles Times reported that the budget deal, announced by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and bipartisan lawmakers on Monday, would involve the early release of thousands of inmates.
The Times said the reduction would be achieved through a combination of measures including allowing prisoners to finish their sentences on home detention and creating incentives for completion of drug rehabilitation plans.
The prison inmate proposal would help save the state 1.2 billion dollars in the coming fiscal year, the report noted.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca meanwhile condemned the proposed state budget, telling the Times that cuts to local government would force authorities across the state to shut down jails or cut back on street patrol officers.
“I think it is one thing to have a natural disaster… but it is another thing to have local cities and counties hit by a disaster predicated on the irresponsible actions of the state legislators,” Baca told the Times.

Amazingly enough, after looking over the "sentencingproject" PDF, it appears that Texas has a better racial distribution of jailbirds than one might expect.

ras_menelik, thank you, great info.
Do you know where I can find sentencing statistics by gender? I am also interested in statistics for criminal charges and case outcome by state/county for various criminal charges. - 7 months ago

This is probably one of the most sensible steps that Cali. could take. The residual consequences can create a monster of their own creation if not dealt with properly. What will happen when one of these 27K commits a major crime? That is, up to and including murder. Will they react or respond.
Californians are between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The way that they work through their problems will determine the future character of the state. Will they keep that eclectic individualistic face? I, for one hope so. It would be a sad world if we had to turn to other places as our trend setters. Keep your head up Cali. A lot of people are pulling for you. - 7 months ago

The US has way too many people in prison. This is a welcome move. We need more alternatives and less incarceration.
All non-violent drug offenders should be released immediately.

Why US have more prisoners then any nation in the world? It appears that this "correction" system creates more violence in our country. No one gets "corrected"... There is no recovery model... There is simply no other way to survive but to return to prison. It would be great improvement in our society and minimize the violence by developing alternative solutions for non-violent crimes. - 7 months ago

How bad is your debt? Since locking up many prisoners for little to no reason and the "creditable" LAPD has caught up with them. Over-crowding a prison does have its down-turn. Deal with racism and hey you might save half a billion.

Why don't they go ahead and tackle the "weed issue"?? If taking 27K prisoners out of the prison system will save the State of CA and the tax payers $1.2 Billion dollars, why not change the law/reason that some of those prisoners got incarcerated to begin with??? Tax the weed, generating even more revenue for the State(1.4 Billion more). It will create jobs outside of the urban centers and lighten the pressure on our healthcare system. It is high time to allow American families to help, heal, employ and save themselves. LET AMERICA GROW!!!
