Transgender teacher loses work after sex change

"The former William McBeth had undergone sex-reassignment surgery and was now Lily McBeth. The schools' 2006 decisions to keep her on as a substitute were hailed around the nation as a model of tolerance and acceptance of transgender Americans.But the storybook ending never happened: She got only a handful of assignments since then and is resigning in frustration.
...
Before her transition from male to female in 2005, McBeth said she averaged between 15 to 18 assignments a year as a substitute teacher for elementary students in the Eagleswood school district, and 16 to 20 a year in the Pinelands Regional School District, teaching high school students."
Just goes to show discrimination is alive and well. I understand the lack of comfortability that may arise from those that are not familiar with transgender people, but even though she's a substitute, isn't this a violation of worker's rights?

I had a comment deleted on this thread as well. Considering how GodsnLiberals started out posting on this thread. I am frankly shocked that the staff of Current would allow such a comment, clearly offensive, to remain, while anything that contradicts or mirrors back at what GodsnLiberals said is deleted.
In other words its ok for him to say that someone is fucking ugly but its not ok for others to do so.

I'm reposting my comment, it says it's under review but I haven't the slightest idea why. It must be a mistake because it doesn't even have anything remotely offensive in it! Especially when compared GodsnLiberal's post.
Decide for yourselves, I thought it was rather insightful as to why this kind of discrimination happens.
"It's still too taboo, most people feel very comfortable in excessive gentrification. It's an integral part of identity.
It was sort of like how racism worked in the nineties. A white person commits a crime, it's just man robs store. A black person does, it's black man robs store.
In fact, in my own example I did it. People still consider sex to be some enormous part of what kind of person you should be.
So much so that most people aren't even willing to admit that intersex people (hermaphrodites) actually exist, even though 1 in 10,000 births has mixed genitalia.
Look, social conservative America can barely adjust to a black man being President and a public health system that came sixty years too late. It's gonna be a while before they stop being douche bags about this.
It even makes me uncomfortable sometimes. We're just not there yet as a nation."

In most school districts, teachers choose their own substitutes. When they're scheduling a day off (whether it's the day before or a month in advance) they will go into a giant database of registered subs, and choose the one they're familiar with, the one who handles their classes the best. If the teacher doesn't manage to secure a sub ahead of time, THEN the officials at the school assign one.
It's possible that individual teachers may be prejudiced against this person, or it may simply be that the teachers know that many students aren't evolved enough to be mature about this kind of thing, and would spend more time torturing the sub than getting work done. The reason for lack of assignments could be as simple as that.
All I'm saying is - don't be so quick to judge the school district.

Excellent points. I agree that the maturity level of many high schoolers might not permit an effective learning environment, and that's a cold, hard fact. It's too bad the educational system can't also educate on tolerance/acceptance from an earlier age.

@unimatrix0...............
This person will be teaching children.........
and it'll be distracting because;
1) They will be terrified every moment in class with it.
2) and it'll be a stark reminder that some people stubbornly and defiantly want to become a sex they were never born to be. - 7 months ago

"1) They will be terrified every moment in class with it."
You are not the children of this school district. You do not know that. Just because you are afraid of something does not mean that others are, or should be."2) and it'll be a stark reminder that some people stubbornly and defiantly want to become a sex they were never born to be."
And what business, exactly, is that yours, to tell people what gender they should be? I, personally, would never want to be a woman. But I'm not in that person's shoes, or anyone else's, so it's not for me to judge. Just because you believe something is wrong with someone does not make it true, or distrcting/disruptive to a learning environment.
These kids are going to have to grow up and go out into the "real" world where there are all manner of transgendered, bi, straight, gay, black, white, effeminite, masculine, Muslim and Christian people. I feel that if we enforce that this behavior is wrong or somehow makes this person lesser than a human being worth equal treatment, we've already lost the battle for equality.
