"Acted Stupidly"

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.

"This still haunts us," Obama said.

Obama called Gates a friend, and said he doesn't know all the facts of the case. Nonetheless, Obama said, anyone would have been angry if treated the way Gates claims police in Cambridge, Mass., treated him. Gates, a Harvard University professor, claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.

"Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof he was in own home," Obama said during a prime-time news conference that otherwise focused on the health care debate.

Poor choice of words? Or deserved?

    • Meh, you treat police officers with disrespect, and act belligerently to them...yes, you should be arrested for disorderly conduct.

    • And did anyone else get a bit nervous when Obama used the word "Jigger?" For a split second I thought I heard something else. Besides, one of its meanings is when Jews are called Jiggers when they are accused of acting black? Very poor choice of word when it has no meaning to breaking into a house.

not seeing your reference anywhere standard. urban dictionary has it but I have never heard the term and i doubt Obama or anyone he knows or works with is likely to run in circles where a term like that is used.

There was a more famous similar example in a state level meeting were one white official used the term niggardly to describe the actions of a black official. Even though the word happens to sound like the "N" word it is actually a standard, if rarely used scandinavian origin word that means "unbelievably cheap" and has nothing at all to do with the term. There was a minor outcry, but in the end even the most inflamatory of the protesters admitted he didn't mean anything by it.

    • I found this question and long winded answer from the President took away from the meaning of the press conference.

Why would the President who even admitted to being biased, admitted to not being there, and admitted to not having all the facts use the word "acted stupidly" when describing the actions of law enforcement who were responding to a potential burglary.

The police DID NOT arrest this man for burglary but for his "conduct."

Therefore unless you were a witness Mr. Obama, please do not use language like "acted stupidly" on prime time National television when describing our underpaid law enforcement citizens who put their lives on the line everyday. YOU WERE NOT THERE!

They simply responded to protect this man's house and ended up having to arrest him for his conduct.

I wasn't there so I cannot call out either or to blame.
