A Tokyo railway company has introduced a smile scan for their staff this month, to improve their communication skills with their customers.Keihin Express Railway company has introduced a device which detects how broadly they grin by calculating the curve of the mouth.
The company's station employees are encouraged to test their smile before they head to the platforms and ticketing areas to assist passengers.
Although it is not compulsory for them to use it every day, all 107 wokers at the station have tested their smile.
About 250,000 passengers a day pass through Shinagawa station. That is a lot of people and a lot of smiles.
