Sudanese woman faces 40 lashes for wearing trousers

A Sudanese woman who is due to appear in court in Khartoum says she faces up to 40 lashes for wearing trousers.

The woman, Lubna Hussein - a former journalist who now works for the United Nations - has invited journalists and observers to the trial.

She was arrested in a restaurant in the capital with other women earlier this month for wearing "indecent" clothing.

She said 10 of the women arrested, including non-Muslims, later each received 10 lashes and a fine of $100.

Ms Hussein and two other women asked for a lawyer, delaying their trials.

Now Ms Hussein has printed 500 invitation cards and sent out emails, saying she wanted as many people as possible to attend her hearing on Wednesday.

She says she has done nothing wrong under Sharia law, but could fall foul of a paragraph in Sudanese criminal law which forbids indecent clothing.

"I want to change this law, because this law doesn't match in constitution," she told the BBC.

"It is important that people know what is happening," Ms Hussein is reported to have written on the invitations she circulated.

"They will lash me 40 times, and also fine me 250 Sudanese pounds ($100)."

The BBC's James Copnall in Khartoum says Ms Hussein is determined to generate as much publicity as she can.

In a related development, a female journalist who wrote an article critical of the way Ms Hussein has been treated has been charged with defaming the police.

Amal Habbani faces a substantial fine if found guilty, AFP news agency reports.

somebody should do a study.... average length: probably 3" or less [like 7-8 cm for you overseas folks..]

    LOL!
losers need to control other folks. makes them FEEL like winners.

doesn't MAKE them winners, but they FEEL like winners.

there is only one reason women, not just in Sudan - but around the world, are supposed to wear dresses. i think we all know what it is, and to me...that is the most disturbing part. men are pathetic sex craved pigs.

Who let her out of the kitchen in the first place?

Just by looking at her I can tell that she is a huge sinner and 40 lashes are not enough. They should be very religious and act like really spiritual Muslims and chop her head off.
What nerve she has to wear pants!
If they let her go so easily after only 40 lashes, the next thing you know, they will only chop Christians' hands off instead of chopping off their heads. This must not be tolerated. Ala wants muredr and violence, not just lashes.
How do we know that ala wants murder?
Because Mohamed said, that ala said, that Mohamed should tell the people, that he wants them to kill people, who do not want to become Muslim.
Oh, and ala also told Mohamed, to tell the people, that ala said, that Mohamed should tell them, that after they do the murder, they will get the best that ala could ever possibly think of. They will get 72 sixteen year old virgins to give them sex in heaven. Wow! i almost forgot to add that.

    hmmmmm...

I hope this works out the way this woman wants it too. I have a feeling if she doesn't win, it will be a lot worse than 40 lashes. And what are the chances of her winning? It doesn't seem probable...

She will take the 40 lashes to show the world how barbaric their rule of law is,...an example for all of us to ponder.

    the slut!
"Abu, did you see that woman in trousers!"
"Barbaric, isn't it Muhammed? I had an erection that lasted 6 hours."
    "Did you call your doctor?"
"No, I raped my camels. They all sent me flowers the next day."
"What are your camels doing tonight? I still have raging boner."

Some of these horrible women! First you allow them to talk, and next thing you know, they abuse the freedom and start wearing pants!!
Women! So greedy and sinful! Off with her head! No more lenient 40 lashes, that is what we give to bad children under five. She deserves even more. Chop her head off so we all go to heaven and get the chics.

I guess I just suffer from ignorance. I've not read the Quaran. Then again, I don't speak or read Arabic either, so from what I've read it would be waste anyway. I AM aware of how translations suffer.

But from what I HAVE read, muslim women should be modest in dress. Care should be taken to hide their "enticing parts." Pants don't qualify? I sure don't know why not. Sexy they're not. Revealing they're mostly not. Was this girl wearing skin tight jeans? Even so.....

Assuming this is all on the up & up, then what we have is a violation of religious mores, not laws. These vary from place to place. For example, many Iraqi women go without the veil, but don't consider themselves any less Muslim because of it.

So this girl is right, and Khartoum is wrong. Is this a case of Mormon or Southern Baptist against Catholic? It would seem so. But having to go to court with the possibility of lashes is beyond reason.

    Let the girl go.

The people and government of Sudan should be ashamed.....how they treat their own in this world where others treat people so badly is so shitty.....

I am disappointed by some of the commenters instead of saying something on behalf or in support of these women all you can do is childishly mock Islam. Please don't be confused even in this country women are sometimes blamed for being raped for wearing provocative clothes.

Rape is an act where one person forces sex with another.

The guilty party is the one doing the forcing. Everything else is circumstantial evidence.

Girls make a pointed attempt to be as appealing as they can. This is an attempt to attract attention and possibly a future mate. It's not an invitation to rape.

But there are those amoung us that view this attempt as succeeding only too well. Is it the mans fault he's not all that bright? Or the girls fault for putting those those thoughts in there to begin with? Here we have 6 of one and half dozen of another.

Is the solution to muzzle the girls? Islam tries that; mandating they be modest. But if Islam had their way, I'd not be able to appreciate those scantily clad sweeties that parade up and down on trhe beach, or at local swimming pools. I'd miss that. They ARE something to look at. But then again my contemplation doesn't lead me to rape. Now if the sweetie demonstrates she's willing.....

Muzzling the guys would fare no better. You can't legislate desire. And for most young men, the most humane thing you could do would be to nail them in a barrel and feed them through the bung hole until the time of strong desires passes. It's hard fighting nature.

So where is the solution? Damn if I know. Education. Restraint. Family values. Human values. Tribal mores. All I can observe is that a muzzle isn't the answer; Matter's not who you put it on.

I support any Muslim man or woman who is against rape and murder and beheadings and whippings and violence in general. That is hard to find though.
There are some Muslims who are embarrassed by the daily murders done by fellow Muslims who loudly and proudly say they are Muslims. People who will not give candy to children when a murder has been committed, and will not applaud death or rape or decapitation or lashing, those are the ones I want to hear from. I wish they would call out for freedom. Not just freedom of speech. How about, "Freedom from violence?"
Hate death and violence and love love. Can you do that?

That shows how things are MUCH better here in America. She gets arrested for her INDECENCY in public for wearing pants. Here in the USA, ladies get arrested for indecency for NOT wearing pants. That's much more fun!
