5,000 children between the ages of six and fifteen where asked some historical questions such as 'who discovered gravity?' 'what was the Somme?' and 'who wrote King Lear?' and the answers the kids gave were a little...surprising.1 in 20 thought Bob Geldof discovered gravity, 12% thought the Somme was a painting and a quarter didn't know Shakespeare wrote King Lear. Oh, and one in 20 were under the false impression that Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was written by Harry Potter author, JK Rowling.
It seems fairly apparent what we're not teaching kids today, so what are they actually learning? I'm curious. Answers on a postcard.

This is actually pretty interesting, because all of these facts that kids don't know about are related to historical culture. But should we really be worried that most kids don't know the exact year of the signing of the Magna Carta? I'd be more interested to find out what cultural/political/social facts they know (or don't) that are relevant to our lives today.
