"Israeli Apartheid" a New guide for Beginners

In a burst of uncharacteristic honesty, the then Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert asserted in 2007 that "[m]ore and more Palestinians ... want to change the essence of the conflict from an Algerian paradigm to a South African one ... That is, of course, a much cleaner struggle, a much more popular struggle - and ultimately a much more powerful one. For us, it would mean the end of the Jewish state."The apartheid paradigm here fearfully evoked by Olmert has crept slowly but surely into mainstream political discourse on the Palestine issue, but is still avoided by many who are otherwise supportive of the Palestinian cause.
This is because the paradigm seems to offer a hostage to fortune: it is too easy for Israel's apologists to rebut it by instancing the many systemic differences between Israel and apartheid South Africa.
What has often been overlooked is that the UN General Assembly's International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid (November 1973) extended the term to "similar policies and practices of racial segregation and discrimination as practiced in southern Africa" while defining the crime in more general terms as "inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them." Israel's practices need not be compared with those of apartheid South Africa -- which they often resemble -- but evaluated on their own terms in the light of the Convention.
The UN itself contributed to the occultation of the Convention's relevance by omitting it from its 2002 "Compilation of International Instruments," apparently on the mistaken belief that with the end of South Africa's apartheid regime it had become obsolete.
In 1987 the Israeli academic Uri Davis published Israel: An Apartheid State, following it in 2004 with Apartheid Israel: Possibilities for the Struggle Within. In 2001 he founded the Movement Against Israeli Apartheid in Palestine (MAIAP). These hints were taken up by organizations like the Stop the Wall Campaign, which consistently proposed the apartheid paradigm as something more than a mere analogy with South Africa.

There is no such thing as Israeli Apartheid. It is a mde-up and an un-fitting term. Israel was created by a UN charter - as a result of a tragic Holocaust (denied by Iran's MadJob and a few select posters here) - to allow Jews to return to their HISTORIC home - and to establish a Jewish nation - where Holocaust would not ever have a chance of resurfacing. Since its creation, Israel has been a thorn in the side of Arabs, Muslims, Anti-Semites, etc. It's been invaded, terrorised, bombed, threatened to be wiped out - all the while the nation came up strong, prosperous, progresive, free, advanced and flourishing. It is all over the old Testament - and while Jews were expelled from Israel a number of times, only the true haters will deny the BIBLICAL right of Israel to exist.
You all can say what you want. You all can hate as much as you can. Israel will prevail. If some dark and evil power will try to wipe it out, Israel will take the entire muslim world down with it - and that would be a tragedy indeed.
Stop the bloodshed, stop the violence, lay down the guns. Israel wants nothing but peace with its neighbours. Look at Jordan, Egypt, Turkey. They've realized it. The amount of money that is spent by the evil on the armed struggle would be enough to build palaces for every single palestinian to live in. You just don't get it - Israel will be there long after your hateful brain goes dead!!!
Long live Israel. Peace be upon her. May her children know only blue skies and never hear the wailing of the air-attack sirens... - 6 months ago

Bring both of your hands so you can count all the Jews who are still allowed to live in many of the Arab countries because they were exterminated or kicked out.
You will never call Saudi Arabia a nation whose entire policy is APARTHEID. No, you see, they are the ones who cleverly paid fifty million to N.Y. advertising agencies to build up anger against Israel. That helped the Saudis take away focus from upon themselves.
The Saudis will not work because they are too dignified to work, andthey are superior to all other people, even other Muslims. So, they bring in tens of thousands of workers from other countries. They live in a system that purposely segregates Saudis and non Saudis into the upper group and the lower groups. That is apartheid.
Yet, you ignore all that the Saudis do to their 3,100 political priisoners who have been tortured for more than four years and instead, you focus on waterboarding while Mr. Obama bows down to the Saudi King Abdullah. He bows while knowing that the Saudis have TENS of thousands of slaves today. Not, a thousand years ago, not three hundred years ago, but TODAY. Yet, Mr. Obama bows even while he is against slavery obviously.
Instead, they have you all repeating what you were suposed to say, "Israel is an apartheid country" even though Israel has members of the Parliament who are Arab Muslims and even cabinet ministers who are Arab Muslims.
Hey guys, try to find one single Jew in any Arab Muslim government. You can't, because all 22 Arab Muslim countries will not allow it. yet, you condemn Israel which definitely does allow Arab Muslims to serve in the government.
Also, You don't even mention one sentence about the three million Arab refugees who live in camps in Jordanand Lebanon. Those refugees are not even allowed to leave the locked down camps. yet, they have you focusing on Israel which not only opens the camps but gives them jobs and food.
The wealthy Arab Moslem nations give the "palestinians" who live in Jordan and Lebanon....nothing. Those refugees get zip, zilch, nada from the oil rich nations with their Arab Muslim brothers right next door and they also wil lnot allow them entry into their countries.
Those refugees are there because the Arab nations all announced that they were cominng in to take Israel over because the U.N. was wrong to vote for the country of Israel. They were told to run for their lives and they sure did, but Israel did not tell them that. Their own Moslem Arab brothers told them to run, and although they treid often to take over Israel, they never did. - 6 months ago

i grew up during segregation of blacks and whites. I remember the Watts riots in the 60's. If you keep a certain group seperate from you, it makes them angry. If I were black during those days I would be angry also. In thought this was Apartheid in Los Angeles. Im ashamed that it was allowed. I don't blame any group that is treated this way to riot, and in the terms of Palestine I don't blame them for the way have to take care of their anger. If you keep an animal in a cage no food no freedom, no covering like a home. You will be attacted.

An imbecile that accuses people of anti-Semitism when those people are criticising Israel's policies toward the Palestinian population is nothing but a hateful anti-Semite themself.
Idiots like that will be the downfall of the Jewish state and are harmful to Jewish people everywhere. Israel doesn't need to be represented by right wing fascist idiots.
This siltation needs intelligence, compassion and even handedness, not idiot idealogical unconditional support for EITHER side.Calling this "Apartheid" makes it more emotive, but goes some way to addressing the reality of he siltation on the ground. Now if the Palestinians would cease violence and follow the example of Mandela things would be better for everyone.

Great post...it brings out the good and the ugly.
Belligerent haters all wrapped in their paper armor of jealousy and self-righteousness, have resorted to new tactics. The Crusades accomplished nothing because it strengthened the Muslim empire and created future avengers, the inquisition was a failure because it helped spread the Jewish people to scores of countries but most notably to Africa and Asia and eventually helped bring millions of Jews to the U.S.A. The holocaust gave Israel back to the Jews and with their minds working in unison in one fixed country, gave them the highest concentration of advanced technology on the planet, besides becoming the fourth largest nuclear power since 1952 without ever threatening to use it.
It is great to see a post like this; it clearly delineates and forces the fence sitting posers, to show their hands and reveal the inner core of rottenness and anti Christian behavior. Yes, anti Christian, because Jesus never, ever, wanted or asked for people to hate and murder his people. Search both Testaments and you will not find a single chapter or paragraph or sentence teaching hatred against his people. NOWHERE.
Yet, even with the glorious label "Love" present at every Church and every mass and every Baptism and every convocation or gathering, the haters of The Christ's origin, go on detesting his people with disgust and they even believe they are justified, because they know better than he. Unfortunately, that is exactly the devil's wish...to twist love into hate; we must not fall. May the devil swallow his own evil and destroy himself.
We all see what people controlled by the devil can do. Let us not fall too.
We must remember, e v i l are the last four letters of devil. Evil is in the devil.

Bunch of fucking bigots and antisemites. What's on show here is trick number 12 in Schopenhauer's list of common dialectical devices. To carry out this trick you simply choose a term which is favourable to your proposition. For example, what an impartial person would call a 'security wall is described by a biased neo-Nazi as an 'apartheid wall'.
And so might the tiger complain about the aggressive bleating of the tehered goat and the wolf be righteously indignant at the attitude of non-cooperation taken up by the reluctant lamb.
Welcome to the dark, bitter and twisted world of racists and haters on a site that claims to be liberal but welcomes and supports sickos and fascists purporting to be peace lovers.

I do know some Jews that are against this action but they are affraid to speak,it's too bad because they need to speak up on the crimes against humanity in the name of Israel. Karma, Karma, Karma. They will get theres and I hope Im alive to see it.

well ma see that i dont agree with... you wont "allow" your kids... so if your child comes home one day and wants to be a christian or buddhist or muslim or whatever you wont allow him? you would ostracize him? thats acting the same way as a lot of religionists.. i mean i am a man of faith but if my daughter came home and told me that she didnt believe in God and was an atheist i would support her.. i've always said i want my daughter to have freedom to make her own choice regarding that because my mother did the same...

Part III is entitled, self-explanatorily, "Towards Inclusion and Peace -- Resisting Israeli Apartheid." White focuses first on organizations on the ground in Israel/Palestine -- Adalah (the Legal Centre for Minority Rights in Israel), ADRID (Association for the Defense of the Rights of the Internally Displaced), ICAHD (Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions), Popular Committees Against the Wall (particularly those in the Palestinian villages of Budrus and Bilin), and Zochrot ("remembrance" in Hebrew), "an organization made up of Israelis concerned with raising awareness of the Nakba amongst their own people" (Nakba, Arabic for "catastrophe," is the name Palestinians give to their forced expulsion from their homeland in 1947-48).Next he turns to "International Solidarity," concentrating on activities rather than organizations: boycotts, divestment, sanctions (three strategies often grouped together as BDS), protest and education, support for grassroots Palestinian and Israeli groups, and trips to the region, whether of a "fact-finding" or more committed nature.
In pondering "a different kind of future," White stresses that there is no point in "trying to 'undo' things that cannot be undone." He castigates rhetoric about a "two-state solution" or demands that Palestinians should "compromise," as if the solution could by-pass the dissolution of Israeli apartheid. It is only by "guaranteeing the collective and individual rights of all the peoples of Palestine/Israel, that the people of the region can realize the kind of peaceful tomorrow previous generations have been denied."
White concludes with an invaluable list of "frequently asked questions" plus their answers, and a useful glossary.
For all those engaged in the "cleaner struggle" against Israeli apartheid that Ehud Olmert so dreads, this little book is an invaluable tool. For those who simply wish to brush up rapidly on the facts of the Israel/Palestine issue, it is equally invaluable.

The "A-word" made a dramatic entry on the world stage with the publication in 2006 of former US President Jimmy Carter's Palestine Peace not Apartheid which, however, used the term rather diffusely and fallaciously exempted "sovereign" Israel (as distinct from the West Bank and Gaza Strip occupied in 1967) from its application. Nonetheless, the term had entered the mainstream and now seems likely to stay there. In this context, Ben White's new book fulfills a consolidating role, drawing together the various strands of the apartheid debate within a number of different contexts. In his introduction White cites the UN Convention's definition of apartheid and highlights a number of the "inhuman acts" that it cites, while underlining the differences as well as the similarities between the cases of Israel and South Africa.
While respecting White's reluctance to over-elaborate, it might have been worthwhile to extend this chapter a little by, for example, stressing Uri Davis' repeated emphasis that apartheid is in essence "the regulation of racism in law," and not merely a catalogue of inhuman acts.
The first part of the book accurately traces the entire history of "the conflict" from 1897 (the first Zionist Congress) to the present in a mere 28 pages, a breathtaking achievement indeed. White is uncompromising and surely correct in seeing the apartheid paradigm at work from the foundation of Israel in 1948, and in diagnosing its premises in the utterances and machinations of the likes of Herzl (founder of political Zionism) and Ben-Gurion (Zionist "pioneer" and the first Israeli Prime Minister).
Part II characterizes the specificities of Israeli apartheid under 17 headings from "Israel a state for some of its citizens" through "The occupation" and "The separation wall" (apartheid, of course, being the Afrikaans word for separation) to "The fragmentation of Palestine." White reminds us that "around half of the entire Palestinian population as a whole are not ruled by Israel at all: they are the refugees and their descendants who were denationalized, expelled and forcibly kept out of their homeland by the first, dramatic acts of Israeli apartheid."
