If you thought the New York Times was joking when they hyped an academic paper that champions the so-called “pullout method” as the next big thing in contraception, you weren’t alone. The Times report refers to an article—“Better Than Nothing or Savvy Risk-Reduction Practice?”—in the June issue of Contraception, the official journal of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.

    • It is true that pulling out is about as effective as condoms. I wouldn't suggest it as your primary method of contraception, but when combined with other forms of birth control, it greatly reduces your chances.

    • I went to a HIV clinic with a friend that is HIV positive and lost his lover last year to HIV.

      I was really upset when I saw two teen girls there today. They looked like the everyday suburb kids that I see everyday in my neighborhood. I wanted to go to church and pray but I took my depressed self home.

    • Pulling out should never be done unless you both are prepared for it to fail, which sometimes it CAN. Just look at the comments on the linked article. Furthermore, if you always pull out, I think it does put a sad spin on the experience because the guy's orgasm is looked at as a terminal negative thing. Furthermore, having a guy pull out unexpectedly feels really crappy for the woman, which can be made even worse if you don't like the feeling of him spraying it all over you. There are other ways to have sex, people. Try sharing an orgasm sometime, or putting focus on the female's pleasure.

    • Works for me! You really think it's a good idea to let guys finish inside you? No it's not 100% effective but it works well with over forms of birth control and if you are having unprotected sex it is the least you can do!
      I'm 30 and have never been knocked up.

      When I am in a monogamist relationship over time condom use gradually disappears. I know I'm not the only one! That is the only birth control I use at present. Condom or not he must pull out. I think it helps.
      Being sexually active at any age you must accept the consequences no method is perfect.

      If you think that method will keep you safe, you are WAY wrong. There is sperm in the pre-come drops, so even if he pulls out in time--which doesn't always happen--you can still get pregnant.
