Tamiflu side-effects on children

Image...
Studies from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show 51% of schoolkids reporting problems after taking the antiviral drug.

However the research took place in April and May – before the government decided to stop using Tamiflu preventatively to stop the diseases. Now only those with suspected or confirmed swine flu now get the drug.

40% reported gastrointestinal problems including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and cramps, while 18% reported a "neuropsychiatric side-effect" such as poor concentration, inability to think clearly, problems sleeping, feeling dazed or confused, bad dreams or nightmares and "behaving strangely".

Hopefully the second set of reasons weren't just an excuse to get more time off school!

Good to know . Not a surprise , though .

The medical recommendations from the front lines have long been in favour of giving antivirals only in cases of dire need - because they aren't great, and they do have side effects. They do, however, take the edge off the illness so there is a role to play.

However, the health ignorance of the general population [as typified by the Chicken Little brigade parroting every loony toon scare story known to man all over Current on a regular basis] is such that the pen pushers made recommendations in line with public opinion. "Do something" being the order of the day instead of "do something useful".

There's an excellent blog from a GP in the UK that has been covering this from the beginning, from the perspective of the unfortunate people who have to deal with the actual fallout from the tabloidisation of medical information - http://thejobbingdoctor.blogspot.com/
