Canada has a single payer system and it works, as you may know if you've either been there or seen Sicko. But the U.S. seems to have largely ruled out a single payer system, which would be a total government subsidized system like the most successful countries have. Here we have to always "compromise". We always have to balance the one side with the other, the right with the left, the Republicans with the Democrats. So naturally we have to vilify any single payer countries, and have the media rewrite the truth and propagandize the value of insurance companies. But really when you think about it, what the hell does insurance have to do with health? It's just another profit scheme for them.

Since we're the country that like to balance things (except for the national budget), how about balancing good with evil, or God with the anti-Christ? Shouldn't we make sure all our kids get some evil to go with the good we teach them? Fair is fair, right? And speaking of evil anti-Christs, we've already had eight years of Cheney's rule by proxy. Let's give the other side eight years - just to be balanced, of course.

    • I love how people against this reform are all about how "Canadians" hate their healthcare, but when an actual Canadian refutes that statement, they dismiss it!

      Ah, well, sorry for the sidetrack.

      Clayjj, you're right, the system is nowhere near perfect. There are some cases where it simply does not work. By and far, however, we all get basic healthcare. You'll find that if she was a citizen in America, she'd still need to pay to get that treatment because chances are your aunt would have been refused insurance in the first place.

      Mind you, I'm not saying our system is perfect at all, but it's far, far better than leaving our citizens to die because we're too damn selfish.

    • As a Canadian I think the problem is Canadians don't realize how gullible people can be. Most people in Canada are chuckling at the fact American's don't adopt universal health care.

      Especially since it means companies when faced with a choice of countries to manufacture in will pick Canada. ie Toyota builds new plants in Canada since they never have to worry about the health care costs of employees.

      If you still want a system where fair has nothing to do with, "it" then fill your boots.

      However if you want a system where post secondary education is affordable to everyone, health care costs are not on the back of your mind and now we are working on free before and after school care. We'll be glad to help.

      BTW the University of Lethbridge in Lethbridge Alberta, still needs students and the extended the application cut off until mid august. $10 000 per year for international students.

    • You know, I don't know about Universal Health Care, but I will say this, they can't possibly increase the wait times. I seriously have to wait an hour no matter what type of doctor I see or what time I go. It's already bullshit.

    • Real Americans speak about the single payer system as the preferred system. It works in other countries. Why must the U.S. compromise with greedy insurance companies on a public option plan? No reason other than health industry campaign contributions.
