This is a very sad story. What is really tragic is how pointless it is!

"An 11-year-old Las Vegas boy died after his mother's car got stuck in sand for five days on their way to Death Valley for a camping trip, officials said Friday.
Carlos Sanchez and his 28-year-old mother set out for an overnight trip to the area Aug. 1, but were stranded when their car got stuck about 20 miles east of Trona....
Their car was found Thursday at the southwest corner of Death Valley National Park after Las Vegas police reported the pair missing. The mother told her rescuers her son had died the day before.
The vehicle was found several miles off a dirt road in the middle of the desert ..."

So, point 1: why in the hell did Mom take her son to Death Valley in August? Did the name of the place DEATH VALLEY not register any importance? How about the time of year?
Point 2) "The pair had no maps and quickly consumed the 24 16-oz. bottles of water" She went off-roading in Death Valley without maps?!
Point 3) they were only 3 miles from a dirt road and had 24 16-oz bottles of water. They could have EASILY hiked 3 miles with that much water, even in Death Valley. If they were smart, they could have hiked at night, hid under rocks during the day, reduced water consumption and lasted a week out there.

I feel SO badly for the mother. She made a HUGE mistake and killed her boy.

It seems obvious to say it, but apparently, it needs to be said: People, if you are NOT an expert in wilderness survival, don't go alone into wilderness situations, especially in wilderness when weather conditions are extreme.

Like, don't drive into a blizzard in summer clothes and without blankets and food and water.
Don't drive around in a hurricane to "see the exciting wind".
Don't chase tornadoes.
Don't try to pet alligators or wild buffalo, etc.
