Nine people were killed on Saturday when a helicopter and a light plane collided over the Hudson River in New York City.

The accident happened in clear weather in an area where pilots operate freely at a low altitude and keep an eye out for other aircraft by sight.

The victims include 5 Italian tourists who were flying in the helicopter on a sightseeing excursion.
